''The Hawk Is Howling'' is the sixth studio album by the Scottish post-rock band Mogwai, released on 22 September 2008, by Wall of Sound, Play It Again Sam and Matador in the UK, Europe, and the US, respectively. It was released in Australia by Spunk Records on 27 September 2008. It is their first album of exclusively instrumental songs, since their earlier albums have all had vocals (singing or spoken word) on some tracks. The album peaked at number 35 in the UK Album Charts and 97 on the ''Billboard'' 200. Writing and recording The album was recorded and produced by Andy Miller at Chem19 Studios in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, Scotland and mixed by Gareth Jones at Castle of Doom Studios in Glasgow, Scotland, between September 2007 and March 2008. ''Travel Is Dangerous'' is an EP by Glaswegian post-rock band Mogwai. The dog on the cover of the EP is called Princess, and belongs to Stuart Braithwaite and his wife, Grainne. The song "Travel Is Dangerous" is one of the few Mogwai songs to have lyrics, and also appears as track #4 on their 2006 album ''Mr Beast''. It is speculated that this song is about the sinking of the Russian submarine K-141 Kursk in the Barents Sea on August 12, 2000. It was rated four stars by ''The Skinny''. Roger Kynard "Roky" Erickson (July 15, 1947 – May 31, 2019) was an American musician and singer-songwriter. Called an "outsider genius," he was a founding member and the leader of the 13th Floor Elevators and a pioneer of the psychedelic rock genre in the 1960s. His singing voice was described as "powerful ndragged." Biography Erickson was born in Dallas, Texas to Roger and Evelyn Erickson, and had four younger brothers. The nickname "Roky", a contraction of his first and middle names, was given to him by his parents. His father, an architect and civil engineer, was stern and disapproving of Erickson's countercultural attitudes, once forcibly cutting his son's hair rather than allow him to grow it out Beatles-style. Post-rock is a subgenre of experimental rock that emphasizes Texture (music), texture, atmosphere, and non-traditional song structures over conventional rock techniques.
