Arthur Nelson Alles
Arthur Nelson Alles was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1943 to 1945. After graduating from Waterloo College, Alles moved to Windsor, Ontario where he found work with Ford. He was elected as the MPP for Essex North representing the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (Ontario Section). In late 1944, he and fellow CCF MPP Leslie Hancock endorsed a proposal by A. A. MacLeod, leader of the Communist Labor-Progressive Party for a coalition between the LPP, the Liberals and the CCF to oust the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party government of George A. Drew. Hancock and Alles left the CCF caucus to sit as Independent Labour MPPs after CCF party leader Ted Jolliffe rejected the LPP proposal. Adélard Charles Trottier (November 8, 1879 – November 29, 1955) was a physician, surgeon and politician in Ontario, Canada. He represented Essex North in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1934 to 1943 as a Liberal. Marcus Leslie Hancock (March 10, 1892 – December 2, 1977) was an English-born horticulturist and politician in Ontario, Canada. He represented Wellington South in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1943 to 1945. He was initially a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) MPP until late 1944 after he and fellow CCF MPP Arthur Nelson Alles endorsed a proposal by A. A. MacLeod, leader of the Communist Labor-Progressive Party for a coalition between the LPP, the Liberals and the CCF to oust the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party government of George A. Drew. The 1945 Ontario general election was held on June 4, 1945, to elect the 90 members of the 22nd Legislative Assembly of Ontario (Members of Provincial Parliament, or "MPPs") of the Province of Ontario. The Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, led by George Drew, won a second consecutive term in office, winning a solid majority of seats in the legislature—66, up from 38 in the previous election. The Ontario Liberal Party, led by former premier Mitchell Hepburn, was returned to the role of official opposition with 11 seats, plus 3 Liberal-Labour seats that it won, out of 6 contested, in coalition with the Labor-Progressive Party (which was, in fact, the Communist Party), in an effort to marginalize the CCF. Ted Jolliffe
Edward Bigelow JolliffeSmith, p. 195 (March 2, 1909 – March 18, 1998) was a Canadian social democratic politician and lawyer from Ontario. He was the first leader of the Ontario section of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and leader of the Official Opposition in the Ontario Legislature during the 1940s and 1950s. He was a Rhodes Scholar in the mid-1930s, and came back to Canada to help the CCF, after his studies were complete and being called to the bar in England and Ontario. After politics, he practised labour law in Toronto and would eventually become a labour adjudicator. In retirement, he moved to British Columbia, where he died in 1998. Early life and education His family had lived in Ontario for generations. His parents, the Reverend Charles and Gertrude Jolliffe, were missionaries for the Methodist Church of Canada, and were living near what was then known as Luchow, China. The Labor-Progressive Party (french: Parti ouvrier-progressiste) was the legal front of the Communist Party of Canada from 1943 to 1959. Origins and initial success In the 1940 federal election, the Communist Party led a popular front in several constituencies in Saskatchewan and Alberta under the name Unity, United Progressive or United Reform and elected two MPs, one of whom, Dorise Nielsen, was secretly a member of the Communist Party.
