Ananda Shankar (album)
''Ananda Shankar'' is the debut album by Indian musician Ananda Shankar, the son of dancer and choreographer Uday Shankar and the nephew of Indian classical musician Ravi Shankar. It was released in 1970 on the Reprise record label. The album fuses Indian music with Western rock and electronic music, and was among the first works in the rock genre by an Indian musician. Consisting mainly of instrumental recordings featuring sitar and Moog synthesizer, it includes a cover version of the Rolling Stones' 1968 hit song "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and a thirteen-minute Indian-style piece titled "Sagar (The Ocean)". ''Ananda Shankar'' followed a series of sitar-based releases by artists hoping to capitalise on the mid-1960s raga rock trend. Ananda Shankar
Ananda Shankar (11 December 1942 – 26 March 1999) was an Indian musician, singer, and composer best known for fusing Western and Eastern musical styles. He was married to dancer and choreographer Tanusree Shankar. Life Born in Almora in Uttar Pradesh(now in Uttarakhand), India, Shankar was the son of Amala Shankar and Uday Shankar, popular dancers, and also the nephew of sitar player Ravi Shankar. He studied in The Scindia School, Gwalior. Ananda did not learn sitar from his uncle but studied instead with Lalmani Misra at Banaras Hindu University. He died in Kolkata on 26 March 1999 aged 56 from cardiac failure. Professional career In the late 1960s, Shankar travelled to Los Angeles, where he played with many contemporary musicians including Jimi Hendrix. The Electric Prunes
The Electric Prunes are an American psychedelic rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1965. Much of the band's music was, as music historian Richie Unterberger described it, possessed of "an eerie and sometimes anguished ambiance." Their most successful material was by songwriters Annette Tucker and Nancie Mantz, though the group also penned their own songs. Incorporating psychedelia and elements of embryonic electronic rock, the band's sound was marked by innovative recording techniques with fuzz-toned guitars and oscillating sound effects. Thaddeus James Lowe (born 1943) is an American musician and record producer, best known as the lead singer of 1960s psychedelic rock band The Electric Prunes and as an audio engineer and producer with Todd Rundgren and the band Sparks (band), Sparks. Life and career Lowe was born in San Luis Obispo, California, and grew up in West Los Angeles. He spent time as a teenager living in Hawaii and began playing Hawaiian music, before returning to California. There, he performed in a folk music, folk duo, married in 1963, and worked at Rocketdyne, a rocket engine production company in Los Angeles, while performing after work. He was influenced by the bands of the "British Invasion" and surf music pioneer Dick Dale, and formed a garage band, the Sanctions, in 1965, by recruiting Mark Tulin (bass, keyboards), Ken Williams (lead guitar), Michael "Quint" Weakley (drums), and various other short-term members. ''The Zodiac: Cosmic Sounds'' is a 1967 collaborative concept album on the theme of the signs of the Zodiac. It was issued by Elektra Records in and featured early use of the Moog synthesizer by Paul Beaver, with music written by Mort Garson, words by Jacques Wilson, and narration by Cyrus Faryar. Instrumentation was provided by members of the Wrecking Crew studio collective.
