Agusan del Norte, officially the Province of Agusan del Norte (; Butuanon: ''Probinsya hong Agusan del Norte''; ), is a province in the Caraga region of the Philippines. Its ''de jure'' capital is the city of Cabadbaran with several government offices located in the highly-urbanized city of Butuan, which is the largest city and its ''de facto'' capital as well as the regional center of Caraga Region. It is bordered on the northwest by Butuan Bay; northeast by Surigao del Norte; mid-east by Surigao del Sur; southeast by Agusan del Sur, and southwest by Misamis Oriental. Jabonga, officially the Municipality of Jabonga (; ), is a municipality in the province of Agusan del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 24,855 people. Geography According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the municipality has a land area of constituting of the total area of Agusan del Norte. Jabonga is bounded by Kitcharao and Surigao del Norte to the north; Butuan Bay to the west; Tubay and Santiago to the south; Surigao del Sur to the east. It is from Butuan City. Cabadbaran, officially the City of Cabadbaran (), is a component city and ''de jure'' capital of the province of Agusan del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 80,354 people. Founded in 1894, the city rose from its Spanish period beginnings to become the premier town of Agusan del Norte. Its rich cultural heritage is evident in its preserved colonial period houses and its archaeological collections. Tubay, officially the Municipality of Tubay (; ), is a municipality in the province of Agusan del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 25,785 people. It was created from the ''barrio''s of Tubay, La Fraternidad, Tinigbasan, Cabayawa, Victory, Santa Ana, and Tagmamarcay of the municipality of Cabadbaran in 1947, through '' Republic Act No. 188''. Magallanes, officially the Municipality of Magallanes (; ), is a municipality in the province of Agusan del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 22,293 people. Las Nieves, ( Spanish for "The Snows"), officially the Municipality of Las Nieves (; ), is a municipality in the province of Agusan del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 30,240 people. History The first traders to enter Las Nieves were natives of Butuan City. They used to travel along the Agusan River in wooden dug-out boats or baoto using a long paddle called ga-o. Kitcharao, officially the Municipality of Kitcharao (; ), is a municipality in the province of Agusan del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 21,278 people. History Kitcharao was created on June 22, 1963, under ''Republic Act No. 3842'', sponsored by Congressman Guillermo R. Sánchez. It was once a ''barrio'' of Jabonga. Carmen, officially the Municipality of Carmen (; ), is a municipality in the province of Agusan del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 23,172 people. History The first Christian settlers of Kabayawa village (now Carmen) was the family of Fulgencio Loque and Demetria Mamba from Jagna, Bohol in the early 1900s. Butuanon Language
Butuanon (Binutwanon, ) is an Austronesian language spoken by the Butuanon people in Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur, with some native speakers in Misamis Oriental and Surigao del Norte. It is a part of the Bisayan language family and is closely related to other Philippine languages. As of 2007, Butuanon is believed to be spoken by fewer than 500 younger speakers in Butuan itself.
