2011 Ballymena Borough Council Election
Elections to Ballymena Borough Council were held on 5 May 2011 on the same day as the other Northern Irish local government elections. Ballymena Borough Council
Ballymena Borough Council was the local authority of Ballymena in Northern Ireland. It merged with Carrickfergus Borough Council and Larne Borough Council in May 2015 under local government reorganisation in Northern Ireland to become Mid and East Antrim Borough Council. The borough of Ballymena was created in 1973 from the merging of the former municipal borough of Ballymena with most of the surrounding Ballymena Rural District. The new council inherited the 1937 charter of incorporation of the municipal borough, continuing the borough status and mayoralty. Makeup The borough was divided into four electoral areas: Ballymena North, Ballymena South, Bannside, and Braid, from which 24 members were elected. Ballymena North (District Electoral Area)
Ballymena North was one of the four district electoral areas in Ballymena, Northern Ireland which existed from 1993 to 2014. The district elected seven members to Ballymena Borough Council, and formed part of the North Antrim constituencies for the Northern Ireland Assembly sco-ulster, Norlin Airlan Assemblie , legislature = 7th Northern Ireland Assembly, Seventh Assembly , coa_pic = File:NI_Assembly.svg , coa_res = 250px , house_type = Unicameralism, Unicameral , hou ... and UK Parliament. Paul Frew
Paul Frew (born 20 September 1974) is a Unionist politician from Northern Ireland representing the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). Frew served as Minister for the Economy from June to July 2021. He has been a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for North Antrim since 2010. He was elected at the 2005 local elections to Ballymena Borough Council. Braid is one of the seven district electoral areas (DEA) in Mid and East Antrim, Northern Ireland. The district elects seven members to Mid and East Antrim District Council and contains the wards of Ballee and Harryville, Broughshane, Glenravel, Glenwhirry, Kells, Kirkinriola and Slemish. Davy Tweed
David Alexander Tweed (13 November 1959 – 28 October 2021) was a Northern Irish politician, Irish rugby union international and alleged serial child sex offender. He served as a Traditional Unionist Voice councillor on Ballymena Borough Council. Sport Tweed won four caps for Ireland in the mid-1990s, with his first, against France, in 1995. Political career Tweed was first elected as a DUP councillor for the Ballymena South electoral district in 1997. He was re-elected for the DUP in 2001 and 2005. In 2007 Tweed was among six Ballymena DUP councillors who refused to canvass for the party in the Assembly elections because of the DUP's policy of sharing power with Sinn Féin. Tweed attempted to resign in February 2007, and he along with five other councillors subsequently resigned from the party and redesignated themselves as the Ulster Unionist Coalition Party (UUCP). Declan O'Loan
Declan O'Loan (born 5 August 1951) is an Irish former politician who served as a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for North Antrim from 2007 to 2011. O’Loan was previously a member of Ballymena Borough Council. He is a member of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), but the party whip was withdrawn on 25 May 2010. O'Loan was elected for the SDLP in the 2007 Assembly Elections. He was suspended by the SDLP after advocating a merger between the SDLP and Sinn Féin to form a single nationalist party. The SDLP had refused to make an electoral pact with Sinn Féin in the 2010 Westminster election. In the May 2011 election, O'Loan ran as an SDLP candidate for re-election to the Assembly from North Antrim, but was eliminated in the last round of ballot-counting. Local Government In Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is divided into 11 districts for local government purposes. In Northern Ireland, local councils do not carry out the same range of functions as those in the rest of the United Kingdom; for example they have no responsibility for education, road-building or housing (although they do nominate members to the advisory Northern Ireland Housing Council). Their functions include planning, waste and recycling services, leisure and community services, building control and local economic and cultural development.
