2014 Galway City Council Election
An election to Galway City Council took place on 23 May 2014 as part of that year's Irish local elections. 18 councillors were elected from three electoral divisions by PR-STV voting for a five-year term of office, an increase of 3 seats when compared to 2009. Twenty-four-year-old Mairéad Farrell, a niece of Mairéad Farrell who was shot dead by the SAS in Gibraltar in 1988, won a seat at the first attempt. She was joined on the Council by 2 other councillors as Sinn Féin won 3 seats. Their gains came chiefly at the expense of Labour who lost 3 fifths of their seats to return with just 2 councillors. While Fianna Fáil won the most votes the party did not make any gains in the election and returned just 3 councillors as in 2009. By contrast Fine Gael gained a seat to become the largest party. Donal Lyons
Donal Lyons was the Mayor of Galway from 2001–02 and from 2014–15. Biography Lyons is a native of Castlebaldwin, County Sligo, but moved to Galway in the 1970s where he married Myra Mulveen of Shantalla, with whom he had Ciara and Aiblhe. A trade unionist, he joined the Progressive Democrats in 1986. He was co-opted to the Corporation in 1996 following the resignation of Liam Madden. In 1999 Lyons and his colleague, Paul Colleran, won two seats in the South Ward. Elected in June 2001, he has stated that his most poignant memory while Mayor is of the Mass in the New Cathedral on Ireland's Day of Mourning for the September 11 attacks (in which Ann Maire McHugh of Tuam was killed). On 18 September he formally opened the new City Hall. He represented Galway at the International Conference of Sister Cities at Aalborg, and addressed the Massachusetts State Senate at the invitation of Jack Yunits and Tom Birmingham. John Mulholland (politician)
John Mulholland (1946 – 12 October 2022) was an Irish politician who was the Mayor of Galway from 1986 to 1987 and again from 1996 to 1997. Life and career Mulholland was born in Dublin in 1946, the eldest of six children of Ned Mulholland of Kinnegad and Betty O'Donoghue of Ballingary, County Tipperary. The family moved to Galway in 1948. In 1968 he married Margaret Flynn of Letterfrack, and moved to London where he worked in a betting office and as a fingerprint officer at Scotland Yard. He returned to Galway to take charge of the family's betting shop. He and Margaret have children Alan, Lisa, Eddie and Aoife Mulholland. Mulholland expanded the business, and by the early 21st century owned ten betting shops. Influenced by Garret FitzGerald, Mulholland stood for Fine Gael and was elected with a large majority for the city's South Ward in 1985, becoming mayor the following year. Hildegarde Naughton (born 1 May 1977) is an Irish Fine Gael politician who has served as Government Chief Whip and Minister of State at the Department of Health since December 2022. Brian Walsh (born 28 September 1972) is a former Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Galway West constituency from 2011 to 2016.
