Events * March 20: the Italian Parliament approves the Law 66 about radio and television; it has chosen December 31, 2006 as the date for the passage of TV broadcasting from analog to digital. Marcello Dell'Utri
Marcello Dell'Utri (born 11 September 1941) is a former Italian politician. He is best known for being a senior advisor to former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, of whom he became a secretary in his early 20s and since the 1970s had worked for him at his many companies, including Publitalia '80 and Fininvest Rai. Dell'Utri's life and career have been marred by controversies and legal issues, including a conviction for external complicity in mafia association. Formerly a member of the Italian Parliament from 1996 to 2013 and of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2004, Dell'Utri was found guilty of tax fraud, false accounting, and complicity in conspiracy with the Sicilian Mafia, also known as Cosa Nostra; the conviction for the last charge was upheld on 9 May 2014 by the Supreme Court of Cassation (Italy), Supreme Court of Cassation, the highest judicial court in Italy, which sentenced Dell'Utri to seven years in prison. Maurizio Costanzo
Maurizio Costanzo (28 August 1938 – 24 February 2023) was an Italian television host, journalist, screenwriter, and film director. Biography Costanzo began his career as a journalist, first as a contributing writer to '' Paese Sera'' and then as managing editor of the weekly '' Grazia''. In the late 1970s, he was the founding editor of the newspaper ''L'Occhio''. Parallel to his career as a journalist, he worked as a radio and TV host, where he became known for his subtle, low-profile irony. His most popular show, ''Bontà loro'' was a staple of RAI's programming but he was forced to resign after news broke that he was a member of the Propaganda Due masonic lodge. Costanzo then moved to Silvio Berlusconi's main TV station Canale 5, where he hosted the ''Maurizio Costanzo Show''. It was the first Italiano talk show. The Contract with the Italians () is a document presented and signed by Silvio Berlusconi on May 8, 2001, during the television program ''Porta a Porta''. With this document, Berlusconi—then leader of the opposition—committed, in the event of an electoral victory, to implement various reforms summarized in five key points. He also pledged that if he failed to achieve at least four of the five objectives, he would not seek re-election. History The idea for the Contract with the Italians did not originate with Silvio Berlusconi. Enzo Biagi
Enzo Biagi (; 9 August 1920 – 6 November 2007) was an Italian journalist, writer and former partisan. Life and career Biagi was born in Lizzano in Belvedere, and began his career as a journalist in Bologna. In 1952, he worked on the screenplay of the historical film '' Red Shirts''. In 1953, he became the editor-in-chief of '' Epoca'' magazine. Active in journalism for six decades and author of some eighty books, Biagi won numerous awards, among which were the 1979 Saint Vincent prize and the 1985 Ischia International Journalism Award. Indro Alessandro Raffaello Schizogene Montanelli (; 22 April 1909 – 22 July 2001) was an Italian journalist, historian, and writer. He was one of the fifty World Press Freedom Heroes according to the International Press Institute. A volunteer for the Second Italo-Ethiopian War and an admirer of Benito Mussolini's dictatorship, Montanelli had a change of heart in 1943, and joined the liberal resistance group Giustizia e Libertà but was discovered and arrested along with his wife by Nazi authorities in 1944. Luciano Violante (born 25 September 1941) is an Italian judge and politician. Biography Violante was born in Dire Dawa. His father, a journalist and Communist, was forced to emigrate to Ethiopia by the fascist regime. His family was held by the British in an internment camp, where Violante was born and remained until 1943. Graduated in jurisprudence at University of Bari in 1963, he joined the magistrature in 1966 and became professor of public law at University of Turin in 1970.
