Erovnuli Liga
The Erovnuli Liga ( ka, ეროვნული ლიგა; ) is the top Division (sport), division of professional top tier Association football, football in Georgia (Country), Georgia. Since 1990, it has been organized by the Professional Football League of Georgia and Georgian Football Federation. From 1927 to 1989, the competition was held as a regional tournament within the Soviet Union. From 2017, the Erovnuli Liga switched to a spring-autumn system, with only 10 clubs in the top flight. History and format evolution The Erovnuli Liga ( ka, ეროვნული ლიგა) is the highest division of Georgian football, established in 1990 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. FC Kolkheti 1913, commonly referred to as Kolkheti Poti, is a Georgia (country), Georgian association football, football club based in Poti. The team competes in the Erovnuli Liga, the top division of Football in Georgia (country), Georgian football. Being registered in 1913, Kolkheti is considered one of the oldest clubs in the South Caucasus. They are the two-time winners of the Soviet republican championship. After an independent Umaglesi Liga was formed in 1990, Kolkheti joined it as a 3rd-tier club and subsequently spent 17 successive seasons before worsening financial problems resulted in their first relegation. As the club's decline continued, it dropped into the third division by 2020. Kolkheti had two unsuccessful playoff campaigns in Liga 3 (Georgia), Liga 3 before securing two consecutive promotions. Davit Goderdzishvili ( ka, დავით გოდერძიშვილი; born 13 May 1973) is a retired Georgian football player who played as a forward. Goderdzishvili spent his entire career in Georgia. He is a member of the 100 club comprising the players with a hundred or more goals. Career Goderdzishvili started his career at 2nd division club Mretebi in 1990. After two seasons, he joined Armazi-90 playing also in the 2nd league. Zurab Ionanidze ( ka, ზურაბ იონანიძე; born 2 December 1971) is a Georgian former professional footballer who played as a forward. Ionanidze spent most of his nearly 22-year career in Georgia where he won three league titles as well as three national cups. Promotion and relegation is used by sports leagues as a process where teams can move up and down among divisions in a league system, based on their performance over a season. Leagues that use promotion and relegation systems are sometimes called open leagues.
