The 1981 Individual Long Track World Championship was the 11th edition of the FIM speedway Individual Long Track World Championship. The event was held on 20 September 1981 in Gornja Radgona in the Slovenia, which was Yugoslavia at the time. The world title was won by Michael Lee of England. Ivan Mauger crashed in heat 7 and was taken to hospital. Josef Aigner (born 19 June 1959) is a former international speedway rider from West Germany. Speedway career Aigner was a champion of West Germany, winning the West German Championship in 1982. He has also reached the final of the Individual Speedway Long Track World Championship on four occasions in 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1984. He won a bronze medal in the 1980 final. Alois Wiesböck (born 31 July 1950), in Niederbergkirchen, is a former Long track motorcycle racing world champion and international motorcycle speedway rider from Germany. He earned 24 international caps for the West German national speedway team. Career Wiesböck was winner of the Individual Speedway Long Track World Championship in 1979. He was also four times West German Longtrack champion in 1974, 1976, 1978 and 1981. He rode in Great Britain during the 1979 British League season as a rider for the Reading Racers but only rode in two matches. Wiesböck rode in the final of the 1981 and 1982 World Team Cup. Zdeněk Kudrna
Zdeněk Kudrna (2 September 1946 – 1 June 1982) was a Czech speedway rider. He reached the Speedway World Championship final in 1979 and also finished third in the Individual Ice Racing World Championship twice, in 1977 and 1979. Kudrna was Czech Ice Racing champion six times, after the last of which he was awarded title ''Sportsman of the Year'' by the Czech Motorcycle Federation. Career In 1974, he represented his country in a test series against England. Kudrna was subject to several failed signing attempts with Cradley Heath Heathens and Bristol Bulldogs when he was due to race in Britain for the 1978 season. He eventually rode in the UK for the Exeter Falcons in 1979 with compatriots Aleš Dryml Sr., Jan Verner and Václav Verner. Karl Maier (speedway Rider)
Karl Maier (born 24 August 1957) is a German former speedway rider. He competed in motorcycle speedway and Longtrack racing. He reached seventeen world longtrack championship finals and was world champion four times. He also earned 38 international caps for the West German national speedway team. Career Maier began his career in 1975 and soon established himself as one of the world's leading longtrack riders. He was crowned world longtrack champion for the first time after winning the 1980 Individual Long Track World Championship in Scheeßel, defeating Egon Müller into second place and taking Müller's place as Germany's longtrack hero. Maier would go on to become long track world champion four times, earning further wins in 1982, 1987 and 1988. In addition, he won eight German national longtrack championship titles. Ivan Mauger
Ivan Gerald Mauger (4 October 1939 – 16 April 2018; last name pronounced "Major") was a New Zealand motorcycle speedway rider. He won a record six World Championships (Finals), a feat equalled only with the inclusion of the Speedway GP Championships by Tony Rickardsson of Sweden. In 2010, Mauger was named an FIM Legend for his motorcycling achievements. Career United Kingdom Mauger first arrived in the UK as a 17-year-old aboard the SS ''Rangitoto'', which docked at Tilbury in 1957, with his teenage bride Raye, renting a one-bedroom flat in Wimbledon around the corner from Plough Lane where Ronnie Moore and Barry Briggs were the star names. Inspired by Moore, Mauger's began racing at Plough Lane in the second-half 'faces of the future' races and assisted the groundsman. Jiří Štancl (born 18 November 1949) is a Czech former international motorcycle speedway rider. He earned 39 international caps for the Czechoslovakia national speedway team. Career Štancl was born on 18 November 1949 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He reached the final of the Speedway World Championship on nine occasions between 1971 and 1984, finishing a career best 9th in 1982 in Los Angeles. He won the Czechoslovak National Championship twelve times, has appeared in the World Team Cup finals on seven occasions and in the Speedway World Pairs Championship finals seven times. In 1974, he represented his country in a test series against England. This was also the first time that he reached the world longtrack final. He would go on to compete in 12 consecutive finals.
