In 1974, he represented his country in a test series against England. This was also the first time that he reached the world longtrack final. He would go on to compete in 12 consecutive finals. Štancl won the famed Golden Helmet of Pardubice in 1974, 1976, 1978, 1981 and 1982 and was also twice runner-up at the World Longtrack Championships in 1983 and 1985.
