West Channel Pile Light
The West Channel Pile Light is an active two-storey octagonal lighthouse in Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia. It was built in 1881, replacing a lightship installed in 1854, to mark the north-east end of the West Sand. The site is listed in the Victorian Heritage Register. Port Phillip ( Kulin: ''Narm-Narm'') or Port Phillip Bay is a horsehead-shaped enclosed bay on the central coast of southern Victoria, Australia. The bay opens into the Bass Strait via a short, narrow channel known as The Rip, and is completely surrounded by localities of Victoria's two largest cities — metropolitan Greater Melbourne in the bay's main eastern portion north of the Mornington Peninsula, and the city of Greater Geelong in the much smaller western portion (known as the Corio Bay) north of the Bellarine Peninsula. Victorian Heritage Register
The Victorian Heritage Register (VHR) lists places deemed to be of cultural heritage significance to the State of Victoria, Australia. It has statutory weight under the Heritage Act 2017. The Minister for Planning is the responsible Minister. Heritage Victoria was established as the State Government listing and permit authority in 1995, replacing the original authority, the Historic Buildings Preservation Council, established in 1974. Listing on the Victorian Heritage Register is separate from listing by a local Council or Shire, known as a Heritage Overlay. Heritage Victoria is currently part of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning of the Government of Victoria, Australia. Chinaman's Hat (Port Phillip)
Chinaman's Hat is an octagonal structure in the South Channel of Port Phillip, in the Australian state of Victoria, which serves as a shipping channel marker and haul-out for local brown fur seals. It is in the Mornington Peninsula Shire, east-south-east of Pope's Eye. Along with the latter, it served as a navigation beacon at the Heads of the bay. History The term ''Chinaman's Hat'', the name once associated with a former military structure, Station M, was transferred to a new seal platform erected by Parks Victoria in 2002. Postwar, a structure was built to replace a dilapidated military installation which had been erected on a dolphin, shortly before 1942, as part of the Port Phillip defence system. South Channel Pile Light
The South Channel Pile Light is a single-storey octagonal lighthouse in Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia. It was built between 1872 and 1874 to guide ships through the narrow South Channel and was occupied by lighthouse keepers until 1925. The light ceased operation in 1985, having operated as a navigational beacon for 111 years, and fell into an era of neglect and vandalism. The structure was restored by Parks Victoria in 1998 in accordance with Heritage Victoria guidelines and relocated three kilometres off the coast of Rye Beach.
