USS Amphitrite (ARL-29)
USS ''Amphitrite'' (ARL-29) was one of 39 ''Achelous''-class landing craft repair ships built for the United States Navy during World War II. Named for Amphitrite (in Greek mythology, the wife of Poseidon and the daughter of Oceanus), she was the third U.S. Naval vessel to bear the name. Originally laid down as ''LST-1124'' on 6 November 1944 at Seneca, Illinois by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Works; launched on 1 February 1945; sponsored by Miss Lillie Williams Kidd; placed in reduced commission on 13 February 1945 for the voyage to Baltimore, Maryland where she was to be converted from a tank landing ship to a landing craft repair ship; decommissioned in Baltimore on 3 March 1945; converted by Bethlehem Steel's Key Highway Shipyard, and placed in full commission as USS ''Amphitrite'' (ARL-29) on 28 June 1945. Achelous-class Repair Ship
The ''Achelous''-class repair ship was a class of ship built by the US Navy during World War II. As the United States gained experience in amphibious warfare, amphibious operations, it was realized that some sort of mobile repair facility would be useful for repairing the damage that frequently occurred to smaller vessels such as LCVP (United States), LCVP's (Landing Craft Vehicle/Personnel). The Auxiliary Repair Light (ARL) ship was designed to meet this need, and the ''Achelous'' class was the only class to receive this designation.
