The Roentgen Building ( it, Edificio Roentgen) is an office building on the Bocconi University campus in Milan, Italy. History The building, ultimated in 2008, was designed by Shelley McNamara and Yvonne Farrell's Grafton Architects, winners of a contest purposefully organized in 2001, as a new office building for Bocconi University. Shelley McNamara
Shelley McNamara (born 1952) is an Irish architect and academic. She attended University College Dublin and graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Architecture. She founded Grafton Architects with Yvonne Farrell in 1978. Grafton rose to prominence in the early 2010s, specialising in stark, weighty but spacious buildings for higher education. McNamara has taught architecture at University College Dublin since 1976 and at several other universities. The Grafton practice was awarded the 2020 Royal Institute of British Architects Royal Gold Medal and their building for the Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología in Lima, Peru, was awarded the 2016 RIBA International Prize, as the best new building in the world that year. Yvonne Farrell
Yvonne Farrell (born 1951) is an Irish architect and academic. She is the co-founder, together with Shelley McNamara, of Grafton Architects, which won the World Building of the Year award in 2008 for their Bocconi University building in Milan. The practice won the inaugural RIBA International Prize in 2016 for their Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología building in Lima, Peru, and was awarded the 2020 Royal Gold Medal. In 2017 she was appointed, along with Shelley McNamara, as curator of the 16th Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2018. She won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2020, also with McNamara. Career Farrell studied architecture at University College Dublin, graduating in 1974 with a bachelor degree. In 1977, together with Shelley McNamara, she established Grafton Architects in Dublin. The Sarfatti Building ( it, Edificio Sarfatti) is an office and educational building on the Bocconi University campus in Milan, Italy at Via Sarfatti 25. History The construction of the building, designed by Italian architect Giuseppe Pagano and his associate Gian Giacomo Predaval, commenced in 1937. The inauguration was held on December 21, 1941. The structure was the first built and corresponds to the original nucleus of the Bocconi University campus after its seat was moved from a palazzo in largo Treves in Milan. Description The building is considered one of the finest works of Italian Rationalist architecture. It features a cross-shaped plan, probabibly inspired from Walter Gropius' Bauhaus Dessau (1925-1926). New SANAA Campus
The New SANAA Campus ( it, Nuovo Campus SANAA) is a building complex on the Bocconi University campus in Milan, Italy. History The complex, which constitutes an expansion of the Bocconi University campus, was designed by Japanese architectural firm SANAA. Inauguration took place on November 29, 2019, in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella. Description The complex includes the new seat of the SDA Bocconi School of Management, a student dorm and a sports center equipped with an Olympic-size swimming pool. The buildings are characterized by sinuous volumes and façades, ground-floor glass windows and interior courtyards, typical of Milanese architecture, that make them porous to the public. Sheltered porticoes link the several buildings, providing sheltered connection across the gardens that separate them.
