MLW M-420
The MLW M-420 was a diesel-electric locomotive manufactured between 1973 and 1977 in Montreal, Canada by the Montreal Locomotive Works. A total of 88 units were built for Canadian railways, including eight B units built for the BC Rail, British Columbia Railway; most of production went to Canadian National. Only seven units were sold outside of Canada, to the State Railways Institution in Venezuela and the Providence and Worcester Railroad in the United States. The M-420 was one of the first locomotive models (along with the EMD GP38-2) to use the wide-nosed Canadian comfort cab, pioneered by Canadian National. By the early 1990s, variations on this cab design had become the standard of the industry. As with wide-nosed General Motors Diesel units from the same period, references to the model commonly add a "W" at the end of the model name, but it is not part of the official model designation. Canadian Comfort Cab
The Canadian comfort cab or wide cab or North American Safety Cab is a broad-nosed cab design found on modern North American diesel locomotives, and some export models. It occupies the entire width of the locomotive, and typically has an access door on the front of the nose. The term ''wide cab'' is somewhat of a misnomer because it is the nose, not the cab, that is widened. Development The basic shape of the Canadian comfort cab first appeared on a hood unit, the EMD DDA40X, in 1969. It was the same design as the F45 and FP45 cowl units being built by EMD at the time. The cab used on the DDA40X was not a true Canadian comfort (or "Safety") cab because it consisted mainly of restyled sheet metal and lacked the structural reinforcements of the Canadian design. Boucherville
Boucherville is a city in the Montérégie region in Quebec, Canada. It is a suburb of Montreal on the South shore of the Saint Lawrence River. Boucherville is part of both the urban agglomeration of Longueuil and Montreal Metropolitan Community regional government. History Early history Boucherville was founded as a seigneurial parish in 1667 by Pierre Boucher, for whom the city was later named. Pierre Boucher came from Mortagne-au-Perche, Normandy, France. After having lived in Quebec City and Trois-Rivières, Boucher moved to the Percées Islands by the southern shores of Saint Lawrence River, where he founded Boucherville. The first Catholic church of the village of Boucherville was built in 1670. This church, made of wood, was eventually replaced in 1712 by a building made of brick. Canadian National 3502
Canadian National 3502 was an MLW M-420W diesel-electric locomotive that was owned and operated by the Canadian National Railway (CN) and which became famous when it served as an emergency generator for the city of Boucherville, Quebec, during a severe snowstorm in 1998. General history CN 3502 (s/n 6071-03) was built in May 1973 by the Montreal Locomotive Works as an M-420W diesel-electric locomotive. It was built as part of a batch of CN units, with CN 3502 being order number 4929. After entering revenue service with CN, the locomotive initially had the running number 2502. It was renumbered with the running number 3502 in 1987, after having its fuel and sandbox capacity reduced. These modifications were removed in 1994, with the locomotive retaining its new running number. In 1998, after being repaired from its use as a generator in Boucherville, CN 3502 was sold to the Ottawa Valley Railway. Bombardier HR-412
The Bombardier HR-412, also known as the MLW HR-412, was a 4 axle, freight locomotive manufactured in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Ten were built for Canadian National Railway in between September and November 1981, numbered 2580–2589, and one was built for Bombardier as a demonstrator in May 1982, numbered BBD 7000. BBD 7000 was later sold to Canadian National. The model designation stood for HR - High Reliability, 412 - 4 axles, 12 cylinder engine. The HR-412 was designed as the successor to the MLW M-420. Progress Rail Locomotives, doing business as Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD), is an American manufacturer of diesel-electric locomotives, locomotive products and diesel engines for the rail industry. The American Locomotive Company (often shortened to ALCO, ALCo or Alco) was an American manufacturer of locomotives, diesel generators, steel, and tanks that operated from 1901 to 1969. The company was formed by the merger of seven smaller locomotive manufacturers and Schenectady Locomotive Engine Manufactory of Schenectady, New York. A subsidiary, American Locomotive Automobile Company, designed and manufactured automobiles under the Alco brand from 1905 to 1913. ALCO also produced nuclear reactors from 1954 to 1962. It was founded in 1856 in Chicago (the United States' major railroad hub) and is published monthly by Simmons-Boardman Publishing Corporation.
