The lake is located in the western part of the Krai. Kulunda, the district capital, lies just from the northeastern shore of the lake. Other inhabited places nearby are Estlan, to the southwest, Novopetrovka, to the east, and Oktyabrsky to the north. The name of the lake is of Kazakh origin.
