In 1960, when Zak was eight years old, Peg and Jed had an argument. Zak was in bed, but he heard them both shouting at one another. The next day, Zak noticed dry blood on the floor and no signs of his father. Peg told him that he had suddenly died, when he actually walked out on the family. Zak had always wondered about the blood on the floor, which was revealed to be Jed hitting Peg with an ornament before walking out.
