The truck driver left the cab to lift the barrier by hand. A Y2-class DMU passed the level crossing distant signal, which showed "expect clear", at 161 km/h. Seeing the crossing blocked, the train driver engaged the emergency brake, slowing the train to 123 km/h at impact. The driver and one passenger were killed instantly, the guard and another passenger were severely injured; a total of 47 passengers were injured. The truck driver was later sentenced to 14 months in jail for causing death and reckless driving.
