Post-internet
Post-Internet is a 21st-century art movement involving works that are derived from the Internet or its effects on aesthetics, culture and society. Definition Post-Internet is a loosely-defined term that was coined by artist/curator Marisa Olson in an attempt to describe her practice. It emerged from mid-2000s discussions about Internet art by Gene McHugh (author of a blog titled "Post-Internet"), and Artie Vierkant (artist, and creator of ''Image Object'' sculpture series). The movement itself grew out of Internet Art (or Net Art). According to the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, rather than referring "to a time “after” the internet", the term refers to "an internet state of mind". Eva Folks of AQNB wrote that it "references one so deeply embedded in and propelled by the internet that the notion of a world or culture without or outside it becomes increasingly unimaginable, impossible." This form of art circumvents the traditional dominance of the physical gallery and museum system. In many cases, the viewer is drawn into some kind of interaction with the work of art. Artists working in this manner are sometimes referred to as net artists. Net artists may use specific social or cultural internet traditions to produce their art outside of the technical structure of the internet. Internet art is often – but not always – interactive, participatory, and multimedia-based. Internet art can be used to spread a message, either political or social, using human interactions. Vaporwave
Vaporwave is a microgenre of electronic music, a visual art style, and an Internet meme that emerged in the early 2010s and became well-known in 2015. It is defined partly by its slowed-down, chopped and screwed samples of smooth jazz, 1970s elevator music, contemporary R&B, R&B, and lounge music from the 1980s and 1990s; similar to synthwave. The surrounding subculture is sometimes associated with an ambiguous or satirical take on consumer capitalism and pop culture, and tends to be characterized by a nostalgic or surrealist engagement with the popular entertainment, technology and advertising of previous decades. Visually, it incorporates early Internet imagery, late 1990s web design, glitch art, anime, stylized Ancient Greek sculpture, Ancient Greek or Roman sculptures, 3D rendering, 3D-rendered objects, and cyberpunk tropes in its cover artwork and music videos. The Berlin Biennale (full name: Berlin Biennale für zeitgenössische Kunst, Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art) is a contemporary art exhibition, which has been held at various locations in Berlin, Germany, every two to three years since 1998. Artie Vierkant
Artie Vierkant (born 1986) is an American digital artist based in Brooklyn, New York, known for his "Image Objects" series. The series is based on the 2010 essay "The Image Object Post-Internet", which he wrote while in graduate school. The series began in 2011 and, as of 2019, is still ongoing. Each work in the series is first created by Vierkant as a digital file on a computer, which he then UV prints out and fits onto a three-dimensional sculpture. As Emily Dubovoy noted in a 2012 ''Vice'' article about the series, "...there’s more to it than just the physical objects that one would view in a gallery. The series has another portion to it that lives in, you guessed it, the internet." DIS is a collaborative project based in New York City. It was founded in 2010 by Lauren Boyle, Solomon Chase, Marco Roso, David Toro, Nick Scholl, Patrik Sandberg and Samuel Adrian Massey, and publishes ''DIS Magazine'', a twist on a lifestyle magazine, lifestyle and fashion magazine, fashion magazine. It is now composed of Lauren Boyle, Solomon Chase, Marco Roso and David Toro. The project's title refers to the prefix wikt:dis-, dis- ('to do the opposite of') and is meant to reflect an oppositional attitude. DIS is primarily known for their interdisciplinary approach to advertising, fashion, communication and popular culture via the Internet. Critics and audiences have associated them with Postinternet art, though they themselves do not identify with the term, dubbing it ‘a pun with no hope for a conceit’ in one interview. Katja Novitskova
Katja Novitskova (born 1984 in Tallinn, Estonia) is an Estonian installation artist. She lives and works in Amsterdam and Berlin. Her work focuses on issues of technology, evolutionary processes, digital imagery and corporate aesthetics. Novitskova is interested in investigating how, "media actively redefines the world and culture, and everything" related to art, nature and commerce. Education Novitskova holds degrees in Semiotics and Cultural Studies as well as a specialization in Media Arts from the University of Tartu, Estonia. She also completed a Masters of Science in Digital Media, University of Lübeck, Germany in addition to studying at the Graphic Design department at the Sandberg Instituut, Amsterdam. Microgenre
microgenre is a specialized or niche genre. The term has been used since at least the 1970s to describe highly specific subgenres of music, literature, film, and art. In music, examples include the myriad sub-subgenres of heavy metal and electronic music. Some genres are sometimes retroactively created by record dealers and collectors as a way to increase the monetary value of certain records, with early examples including Northern soul, freakbeat, garage punk, and sunshine pop. By the early 2010s, most microgenres were linked and defined through various outlets on the Internet, usually as part of generating popularity and hype for a newly perceived trend. New Museum
The New Museum of Contemporary Art is a museum at 235 Bowery, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in New York City. It was founded in 1977 by Marcia Tucker. History The museum originally opened in a space in the Graduate Center of the then-named New School for Social Research at 65 Fifth Avenue. The New Museum remained there until 1983, when it rented and moved to the first two and a half floors of the Astor Building at 583 Broadway in the SoHo neighborhood.
