This is a list of political parties in Singapore, including existing and historical ones. The earliest political parties were established in the lead-up to Singapore first Legislative Council elections in 1948 Singaporean general election, 1948. Singapore is a republic. While the country has a multi-party system, the dominant political party have often been the People's Action Party since 1965, along with the main opposition party, the Workers' Party of Singapore, Workers' Party. Minority governments are uncommon, as elections have not resulted in a hung parliament since independence. Singapore People's Party
The Singapore People's Party (abbreviation: SPP) is a political party in Singapore. SPP was founded in 1994 by Sin Kek Tong who left the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) with various SDP members after internal conflicts in SDP. The leadership was held by Sin until Chiam See Tong left SDP in December 1996 and Chiam assumed leadership. History 1994 - 2000 : Formation SPP was founded on 21 November 1994 by Sin Kek Tong, who led a pro- Chiam See Tong faction out of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP). Over two years, Sin stood as the pro-tem leader until Chiam joined the party and assumed leadership in December 1996, at the time the Parliament was dissolved ahead of the 1997 general election. Singapore Democratic Alliance
The Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) is a political coalition between the Singapore Malay National Organization (PKMS), and Singapore Justice Party (SJP). The SDA was formed in 2001 and initially consisted of four political parties, PKMS, SJP, National Solidarity Party (NSP) and Singapore People's Party (SPP). History SDA was first established in 2001 by Chiam See Tong as he wanted to provide a common grouping under which different opposition parties could stand as a political coalition in elections against the ruling People's Action Party (PAP). The alliance initially consisted of his party SPP, NSP, SJP and PKMS. It was the first coalition to be formed in post-independence since 1963, after the now-defunct Singapore Alliance Party. Potong Pasir
Potong Pasir ( ) is a housing estate located between Toa Payoh and Sennett Estate in the Central Region of Singapore. For urban planning purposes, it is classified under the Toa Payoh area. Potong Pasir is accessible by the MRT station on the North East line. The Potong Pasir Community Club in Potong Pasir hosts facilities such as a multi-purpose hall, activity rooms as well as a KFC outlet. The multi-purpose hall can be used as a badminton court and serves the residents of the state. There are private houses and condominiums located within the neighbourhood, in Sennett Estate. History From 1910 to 1937, it was dominated by sand-quarries, hence giving it its present name, which means 'cut sand' in Malay. Hougang SMC
The Hougang Single Member Constituency is a single member constituency (SMC) located in the north-eastern area of Singapore. The current Member of Parliament is Dennis Tan from the Workers' Party (WP). History The constituency was first formed prior to the 1988 general election and was won by the People's Action Party (PAP) in its debut. However, PAP's representation of Hougang SMC would only last three years, when it lost the seat to the Workers' Party (WP) candidate Low Thia Khiang after an almost 12% swing during the 1991 general election. In the 2006 general election, then- Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong was tasked with helping the PAP to win back the two opposition wards of Hougang SMC and Potong Pasir SMC, the former of which was promised a $100 million upgrading plan. Safe Seat
A safe seat is an electoral district which is regarded as fully secure, for either a certain political party, or the incumbent representative personally or a combination of both. With such seats, there is very little chance of a seat changing hands because of the political leanings of the electorate in the constituency concerned or the popularity of the incumbent member. This contrasts with a marginal seat in which a defeat for the seat holder is considered possible. The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) is a social liberal political party in Singapore. The Singapore Progressive Party (abbreviation: PP), or simply the Progressive Party, was a conservatism, conservative political party that was formed on 25 August 1947. It won the 1948 Singapore general election, 1948 Legislative Assembly general elections with three out of six electable seats. At that time, the self-government power of the legislative system was still rather limited. The Malay Union () (abbreviation: KMS), was a political party in Singapore from 1926 to 1960. History KMS was established on 14 May 1926 as a religious and cultural organisation for the Malay community. KMS's leaders were for the most part, English-educated professionals, and persons of social standing in the Malay community. Ishak bin Ahmad was one of its founding members. KMS wanted to promote the rights and interests of the Malays, and was known for establishing the Jalan Eunos Malay Settlement or ''Kampong Melayu'' in 1929. In 1954, KMS, together with Singapore Labour Party and Singapore Socialist Party allied and formed the Labour Front (LF).
