Singapore Democratic Alliance
The Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) is a political coalition between the Singapore Malay National Organization (PKMS), and Singapore Justice Party (SJP). The SDA was formed in 2001 and initially consisted of four political parties, PKMS, SJP, National Solidarity Party (NSP) and Singapore People's Party (SPP). History SDA was first established in 2001 by Chiam See Tong as he wanted to provide a common grouping under which different opposition parties could stand as a political coalition in elections against the ruling People's Action Party (PAP). The alliance initially consisted of his party SPP, NSP, SJP and PKMS. It was the first coalition to be formed in post-independence since 1963, after the now-defunct Singapore Alliance Party. Desmond Lim
Desmond Lim Bak Chuan ( zh, s=林睦荃, p=Lín Mùquán; born 1967) is a Singaporean politician. He is the secretary-general of the Singapore Justice Party (SJP), a political party in Singapore. He is also the chairman of the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA), a political alliance of several political parties in Singapore including SJP. He was the secretary-general of SDA from 2009 to 2011. Lim participated in the general elections from 2001 to 2025, contesting the GRCs of Jalan Besar (2001), Pasir Ris-Punggol (2006 to 2020) and Pasir Ris-Changi (2025), as well as the by-election of Punggol East SMC (2013), under the SDA. The Potong Pasir Single Member Constituency is a Single Member Constituency (SMC) in the central region of Singapore. It is managed by Jalan Besar Town Council. The current Member of Parliament of the constituency is People's Action Party (PAP) Alex Yeo. History During the 1979 by-elections, Chiam See Tong contested in Potong Pasir Constituency as an independent candidate against Howe Yoon Chong, then a new PAP candidate. After submitting his nomination papers in the by-election, Howe dismissed the opposition candidates as "court jesters" who had come out "to provide comic relief". Kenneth Jeyaretnam
Kenneth Andrew Jeyaretnam (born 7 March 1959) is a Singaporean politician and hedge fund manager who has been appointed as the Secretary-General of the opposition Reform Party (Singapore), Reform Party since 2009. He is the elder son of J. B. Jeyaretnam, a prominent opposition politician in Singapore who founded the Reform Party in 2008. Jeyaretnam received a British undergraduate degree classification#Variations in classification, double first in economics from Cambridge University, Cambridge, and started his career in the financial sector. Steve Chia Kiah Hong ( zh, s=谢镜丰, p=Xiè Jìngfēng; born 3 November 1970) is a Singaporean politician. A member of the opposition Singapore People's Party (SPP), he has been the party's secretary-general since 2019. The MacPherson Single Member Constituency was a single member constituency (SMC) located in the central area of Singapore. At abolition, it was managed by Marine Parade Town Council. History MacPherson Constituency was created for the 1968 general election. In 1988, the constituency was renamed MacPherson Single Member Constituency with the creation of group representation constituencies (GRCs). MacPherson SMC would exist until 1991, when it was merged to Marine Parade GRC. 2006 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 6 May 2006. President S.R. Nathan dissolved parliament on 20 April 2006 on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong three weeks before the election. The People's Action Party (PAP) won 66.6% of the overall votes and gained 82 out of 84 seats. The PAP held the office of Prime Minister for a twelfth consecutive term. The general election was held under the first-past-the-post system. On Nomination Day, the PAP gained 37 seats in divisions which were uncontested by other parties.
