Hougang SMC
The Hougang Single Member Constituency is a single member constituency (SMC) located in the north-eastern area of Singapore. The current Member of Parliament is Dennis Tan from the Workers' Party (WP). History The constituency was first formed prior to the 1988 general election and was won by the People's Action Party (PAP) in its debut. However, PAP's representation of Hougang SMC would only last three years, when it lost the seat to the Workers' Party (WP) candidate Low Thia Khiang after an almost 12% swing during the 1991 general election. In the 2006 general election, then- Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong was tasked with helping the PAP to win back the two opposition wards of Hougang SMC and Potong Pasir SMC, the former of which was promised a $100 million upgrading plan. Hougang
Hougang () is a planning area and mature residential town located in the North-East Region of Singapore. It is the largest housing estate in Singapore based on land area, and is home to 247,528 residents as of 2018. Lee Hong Chuang ( zh, s=李宏壮, p=Lǐ Hóngzhuàng; born 19 July 1970) is a Singaporean politician and business executive. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Hong Kah North division of Jurong East–Bukit Batok Group Representation Constituency (GRC) since 2025. Png Eng Huat
Png Eng Huat (; born 9 December 1961) is a Singaporean politician and businessman. A member of the opposition Workers' Party (WP), he was the Member of Parliament for Hougang SMC between 2012 and 2020. Although he stepped down as an MP for Hougang SMC prior to the 2020 general election, he still remains active in politics. Early life and education Png grew up living in the Tanjong Pagar area of Singapore. He was educated at Peck Seah Primary School and Raffles Institution, before going on to the Singapore Polytechnic, where he completed a Diploma in Electrical engineering in 1983. 2012 Hougang By-election
The by-election was held on 26 May 2012. The by-election was to replace the vacant seat after the incumbent MP, Yaw Shin Leong was expelled from the Workers' Party and his extramarital affairs. This was the 16th by-election since the first election, and the first by-election after over 19 years since 1992. This was the first by-election in Singapore since the new millennium and the 21st century. On Polling day, WP's candidate Png Eng Huat was declared Parliament-elect for Hougang SMC, winning 62.08% of the vote. Yaw Shin Leong
Yaw Shin Leong (; 2 June 1976 – 10 November 2023) was a Singaporean businessman and former Workers' Party (Singapore), Workers' Party politician. He was a Parliament of Singapore, Member of Parliament representing the constituency of Hougang Single Member Constituency, Hougang SMC between 2011 and 2012.
