Gu Jun
Gu Jun (; born 3 January 1975) is a Chinese former badminton player. Career Gu and her regular partner Ge Fei were the world's dominant women's doubles team from the mid-1990s to their retirement after the 2000 Olympics. They won over thirty top tier international tournaments together, including two Olympic competitions and two IBF World Championships (which were then held biennially). They helped China to regain the Uber Cup (women's world team trophy) from Indonesia in 1998, and to retain the Cup in 2000. Gu Jun was elected to the World Badminton Hall of Fame in 2008. Summer Olympics Gu competed in the Atlanta 1996 Olympics in the women's doubles with Ge Fei. They won the gold medal by beating Gil Young-ah and Jang Hye-ock of South Korea 15–5, 15–5 in the final match. Gu and Ge successfully defended their women's doubles title in the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Badminton has been one of the regular Asian Games sports since 1962 in Jakarta, Indonesia. History Badminton made its debut in the Asian Games as a demonstration sport at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo, Japan, and became a regular competitive sport in 1962. In the 1962 Games, six events were held, with singles, doubles and team event for both men and women. The mixed doubles event was added in 1966 Asian Games. There was a playoff between the two semifinal losers to determine the sole winner of the bronze medal in 1962; but since 1966, two bronze medals per event are awarded in each event (except in 1974). Competition Asian Games badminton consists of a single-elimination tournament. Each match is played to the best of three games, each game is of 21 points. The 1996 Thomas & Uber Cup was the 19th tournament of the Thomas Cup, and the 16th tournament of the Uber Cup, which are the major international team competitions in world badminton. The 1996 Thomas and Uber Cup press conference was held in Bank Rakyat Indonesia's building at the Sentra BRI Complex in Sudirman, Central Jakarta. The press conference was led by Putera Sampoerna, the chairman of PT HM Sampoerna Tbk which is the manufacturer of A Mild, the 5th Indonesian largest cigarette brand. A Mild was also the main sponsor of the 1996 Thomas and Uber Cup. The opening and closing ceremony of the tournament was led by Putera Sampoerna. The 1994 Thomas & Uber Cup was the 18th tournament of the Thomas Cup, and the 15th tournament of the Uber Cup, which are the major international team competitions in world badminton. Malaysia were the defending champions for the Thomas Cup while China were the defending champions of the Uber Cup. The tournament was held at Istora Senayan in Jakarta. Uber Cup
The Uber Cup, sometimes called the World Women's Team Championships, is a major international badminton competition contested by women's national badminton teams. First held in 1956–1957 and contested at three year intervals, it has been contested every two years since 1984 when its scheduled times and venues were merged with those of Thomas Cup, the world men's team championship. In 2007, the Badminton World Federation decided to have Thomas and Uber Cup finals separated again but the proposal was ultimately abandoned. The Uber Cup is named after a former British women's badminton player, Betty Uber, who in 1950 had the idea of hosting a women's event similar to the men's. She also made the draw for the 1956–1957 inaugural tournament, which took place at Lytham St. Annes in Lancashire, England.
