Uber Cup
The Uber Cup, sometimes called the World Women's Team Championships, is a major international badminton competition contested by women's national badminton teams. First held in 1956–1957 and contested at three year intervals, it has been contested every two years since 1984 when its scheduled times and venues were merged with those of Thomas Cup, the world men's team championship. In 2007, the Badminton World Federation decided to have Thomas and Uber Cup finals separated again but the proposal was ultimately abandoned. The Uber Cup is named after a former British women's badminton player, Betty Uber, who in 1950 had the idea of hosting a women's event similar to the men's. She also made the draw for the 1956–1957 inaugural tournament, which took place at Lytham St. Annes in Lancashire, England. 1957 Uber Cup
The 1957 Uber Cup was the inaugural Uber Cup; a women's international team badminton championship promoted by Betty Uber. Eleven nations took part competing first (as in Thomas Cup competition) within zones to qualify for interzone matches. The final round was held in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England on 18 March 1957. The United States won the event, defeating Denmark. Qualification Three teams qualified for the interzone stage of the competition, the United States, India, and Denmark. Denmark received a bye in the first round to go directly into the final. 1984 Thomas & Uber Cup
The 1984 Thomas Cup & Uber Cup was the 13th tournament of Thomas Cup and the tenth tournament of Uber Cup, the most important badminton team competitions in the world. On 4 May 1983, the International Badminton Federation announced that both the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup will be combined and held simultaneously starting from 1984. The International Badminton Federation also announced that the Cup qualifiers and the final tournament will be played in a best-of-5 format as opposed to the previous best-of-9 format. Indonesia won its eighth title in the Thomas Cup, after beating China in the final round; and China won its first title in the Uber Cup, after beating England in the final. Badminton World Federation
The Badminton World Federation, aka BWF, is the international governing body for the sport of badminton approved by the International Olympic Committee. It was founded on 5 July 1934 as the International Badminton Federation with nine member nations: Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. In 1981, the IBF merged with the World Badminton Federation, and on 24 September 2006, at the Extraordinary General Meeting in Madrid, the name of the organization was changed to Badminton World Federation. When the BWF was founded, its head office was located in Cheltenham, UK. It was then relocated to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on October 1, 2005. 1963 Uber Cup
The 1963 Uber Cup was the third edition of the Uber Cup, the women's badminton competition. The tournament took place in the 1962-63 badminton season, 11 countries competed. Defending champions the United States hosted the final and claimed victory over England — their third consecutive victory, largely on the strength of Judy Devlin once again winning all three of her matches. Qualification Four teams qualified for the interzone stage of the competition, Indonesia, New Zealand, Canada and England. The United States were exempted until the challenge round.
