Zygogramma
''Calligrapha'' is a large genus of Americas, American Chrysomelinae (a subfamily of leaf beetles), with over 100 species occurring from North America through Central America. Biology Some members of the subgenus ''Zygogramma'' are agricultural pests, while others are used as biological control agents. ''Calligrapha exclamationis'' is a pest species of sunflower crops in North America. At least two species have also been used as a form of biological pest control: ''Calligrapha bicolorata'' was introduced to India as a biocontrol agent for the weed ''Parthenium hysterophorus'', and ''Calligrapha suturalis'' was introduced to Russia as a control for ''Ambrosia artemisiifolia'' (common ragweed). ''Calligrapha exclamationis'', commonly known as the sunflower beetle, is a species of leaf beetle belonging to the family Chrysomelidae, in the subgenus ''Zygogramma'', which was formerly a genus.Shawn M. Clark, Hume B. Douglas, Daniel J. Cavan (2024) Notes on ''Calligrapha'' Chevrolat (subgenus ''Zygogramma'' Chevrolat) and ''Tritaenia'' Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Chrysomelinae). The Coleopterists Bulletin 78(2): 281-295. It is regarded as a pest of sunflower crops in North America. Description ''C. exclamationis'' is a small leaf beetle, 6–12 mm in length, 2–4 mm wide, with a brown pronotum and yellow elytra marked with three, elongated brown stripes and a single, shorter, lateral stripe ending at the middle of the wing in a small dot that resembles an exclamation point. This arrangement bears similarities to the exclamation mark from where this species gets its Latin name. Adult beetles are morphological similar to the Colorado potato beetle, a pest ...

Clark, Hume B. Douglas, Daniel J. Cavan (2024) Notes on ''Calligrapha'' Chevrolat (subgenus ''Zygogramma'' Chevrolat) and ''Tritaenia'' Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Chrysomelinae). The Coleopterists Bulletin 78(2): 281-295. Description ''C. bicolorata'' is a small lead beetle with a brown head, brown and yellow graduated pronotum and yellow elytra marked with characteristic elongated brown stripes. The pattern on the elytra is greatly variable - in a study of 478 beetles, 29 variations on this pattern were identified. Distribution and habitat ''C. bicolorata'' is native to Mexico, but has been introduced to parts of India and Australia. Adults and larvae are used as a form of biological pest control in India in order to control invasive '' Pa ...
