Zecharia Dershowitz
Zecharia Dershowitz (legally Zacharja Derschowitz; July 6, 1860 – April 5, 1921), known as Reb Zecharia, was a Ropshitz Hasid (Polish Jew). He immigrated to the United States in 1888 from Galicia, Poland at age twenty nine. He founded one of the first Yiddish communities in America and the first Hasidic synagogue in Williamsburg, New York. His children utilized the synagogue to save European Jews from the Holocaust by helping them immigrate to the US, hiring them as a rabbi and then firing them. Early life The earliest confirmed family history is the marriage of Dershowitz's parents, Yechezkel Dershowitz to Chana Rivka, some time before 1840, in the district of Tarnów (then Galicia). Ropshitz (Hasidic Dynasty)
Ropshitz (, ) is the name of a Hasidic dynasty, or rabbinical family and group, who are descendants of Rabbi Naftali Zvi of Ropshitz (1760–1827). Ropshitz is the name of a town in southern Poland, known in Polish as Ropczyce. Several contemporary ''rebbes'' are styled "Ropshitzer ''Rebbe''", in reference to the Ropshitz dynasty: Rebbe Chaim Rubin, Ropshitzer ''Rebbe'' of Borough Park, Brooklyn, New York (see Ropshitz branch below), and others. Yaakov ("Yanky") Lemmer (born November 6, 1983) is an American Chazzan (Jewish cantor) and performing artist. Lemmer performs traditional Hebrew liturgy, Yiddish folk, opera, Broadway, Israeli, and Hasidic music. Lemmer currently serves as Head Cantor of Lincoln Square Synagogue, a Modern Orthodox congregation in New York City. A yeshiva (; ; pl. , or ) is a traditional Jewish educational institution focused on the study of Rabbinic literature, primarily the Talmud and halacha (Jewish law), while Torah and Jewish philosophy are studied in parallel. Binyomin Wilhelm
Binyomin Wilhelm (1886–1972) was a founder of Yeshiva Torah Vodaas. Biography Born in Lodz, Poland, Binyomin was the oldest son of a Radoshitzer chassidic family. His mother died when he was eight years old, and he left Europe by himself in 1907 based on correspondence with a friend who preceded him to America. He first peddled from a pushcart, until he had made enough money to rent a store. Within less than two years he had his own houseware business; the business still exists. Yeshiva Torah Vodaath
Yeshiva Torah Vodaas (or Yeshiva and Mesivta Torah Vodaath or Yeshiva Torah Vodaath or Torah Vodaath Rabbinical Seminary) is a ''yeshiva'' in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. History The yeshiva was conceived in 1917 and formally opened in 1918, by Binyomin Wilhelm and Louis Dershowitz, to provide a yeshiva education to the children of families then moving from the Lower East Side to the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn.
