Youth Detention In The Northern Territory
In the Northern Territory, people aged under 17 years pending sentencing or after receiving a custodial sentence are held in youth detention centres. Youth detention is administered by the Department of Correction, with most incarcerated youths being held at either the Alice Springs Youth Detention Centre or the Holtze Youth Detention Centre. The Northern Territory, as of June 2015, had a juvenile detention rate of 16.7 per 100,000 people – the highest of Australia's states and territories. A report released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in April 2016 showed that in 2014–15 of a national total of 900 juveniles in detention on an average day, 41 were in detention in the Northern Territory. However, in terms of incarceration rates, the Northern Territory overwhelmingly had the highest rate of juveniles in detention of any state or territory. Don Dale Juvenile Detention Centre
The Don Dale Youth Detention Centre, also known as Berrimah Prison, is a facility for youth detention in the Northern Territory, Australia. The centre is located in Berrimah, east of Darwin and houses male and female inmates. The facility is named after Don Dale, a former Member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1983 to 1989 and one-time Minister for Correctional Services. The centre is operated by the NT Department of Corrections. On 25 July 2016, the ABC broadcast a ''Four Corners'' report that exposed child abuse in the Northern Territory corrections system. Berrimah Prison
Berrimah Prison, was an Australian maximum security prison formerly located in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. The centre was managed by Northern Territory Correctional Services, an agency of the Department of Justice of the Government of the Northern Territory. The centre detained sentenced and charged felons under Northern Territory and/or Commonwealth law. Following significant overcrowding, decommission plans were put into place and the adult facility was closed on Friday 28 November 2014.
