Don Dale Juvenile Detention Centre
The Don Dale Youth Detention Centre, also known as Berrimah Prison, is a facility for youth detention in the Northern Territory, Australia. The centre is located in Berrimah, east of Darwin and houses male and female inmates. The facility is named after Don Dale, a former Member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly from 1983 to 1989 and one-time Minister for Correctional Services. The centre is operated by the NT Department of Corrections. On 25 July 2016, the ABC broadcast a ''Four Corners'' report that exposed child abuse in the Northern Territory corrections system. The episode " Australia's Shame" resulted in the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory. In late 2024, inmates from the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre were transferred to the new Holtze Youth Detention Centre. Rapper
Rapping (also rhyming, flowing, spitting, emceeing, or MCing) is an artistic form of vocal delivery and emotive expression that incorporates "rhyme, rhythmic speech, and ommonlystreet vernacular". Spit Hood
A spit hood, spit mask, mesh hood or spit guard is a restraint device intended to prevent a person from spitting or biting. The use of the hoods has been controversial, as they are a potential suffocation risk. Justification for use Proponents, often including police unions and associations, say the spit hoods can help protect personnel from exposure to serious infections like hepatitis and that in London, 59% of injecting drug users test positive for hepatitis C. According to Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations in the United States, saliva is considered potentially infectious for hepatitis C, HIV and other bloodborne pathogens only if visible blood is present. Opposition to use Several studies have concluded that the risk of transmission of disease from spitting was low. The spit hoods have been criticised for breaching human rights guidelines. Adam Giles
Adam Graham Giles (né Romer; born 10 April 1973) is an Australian former politician and former Chief Minister of the Northern Territory (2013–2016) as well as the former leader of the Country Liberal Party (CLP) in the unicameral Northern Territory Parliament. Giles is the first Indigenous Australian to serve as a head of government in Australia. Giles became a CLP member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly seat of Braitling at the 2008 election. The Terry Mills-led CLP opposition defeated the Paul Henderson-led Labor government at the 2012 election, winning 16 of 25 seats. John Elferink
Johan Wessel Elferink (born 24 September 1965) is an Australian politician. He is a former member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly for the Country Liberal Party. Early life Elferink was born in the Netherlands and moved to Australia with his parents and older siblings as a three-year-old in 1968. His family settled in Darwin, and he subsequently graduated from Casuarina High School. In 1983, Elferink joined the Northern Territory Police as a cadet. He subsequently rose to the rank of Sergeant (Qualified to Senior Sergeant), and served in both Darwin and Alice Springs. Elferink's career in the NT Police Force was not without incident. In an article in the NT News, he admitted turning up to work so drunk he couldn't fill in routine forms and to crawling round the Darwin Casino roof space. Royal Commission Into Juvenile Detention In The Northern Territory
The Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory was a royal commission established in 2016 by the Turnbull government following the Australia's Shame episode of ABC's ''Four Corners'' which exposed child abuse within the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre near Darwin, Northern Territory. The commission was empowered by Letters Patent and the ''Royal Commissions Act 1902'' to investigate failings in the child protection and the youth detention systems of the Northern Territory Government.
