Yitzchak Hendel
Rabbi Yitzchak HaCohen Hendel (1916-2007) was a prominent Chabad Hasidic rabbi from Montreal. From 1944 until his death in 2007, Rabbi Hendel served as the chief rabbi of the Chabad community in Montreal. Biography Rabbi Yitzchak Hendel was born in 1916 in the town of Komarów-Osada, Poland. He joined the Chabad movement while studying in Warsaw. During World War II, Rabbi Hendel and a number of rabbinical students escaped to Shanghai. After the war, Rabbi Hendel moved to Montreal. Rabbi Yitzchak Hendel served as the chief rabbi for Montreal's Chabad community. His appointment as chief rabbi began soon after his marriage in 1944. Upon the request of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson Rabbi Hendel helped establish the Chabad community in Montreal. Komarów-Osada
Komarów-Osada () is a village in Zamość County, Lublin Voivodeship, in eastern Poland. It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Komarów-Osada. It lies approximately south-east of Zamość and south-east of the regional capital Lublin. History On 31 August 1920 the village was the site of the Battle of Komarów, one of the most important battles of the Polish-Soviet War. It was the largest cavalry battle in the history of war since 1813, the last great battle of any significance in which cavalry was used as such and not as mounted infantry, and a decisive victory for the Poles. Before the war there were about 1,752 Jewish inhabitants out of 2,895. In September 1941, there were 3,000 Jews in Komarow, among them those who were expelled from other towns. Av Beis Din
The ''av beit din'' ( ''ʾabh bêth dîn'', "chief of the court" or "chief justice"), also spelled ''av beis din'' or ''abh beth din'' and abbreviated ABD (), was the second-highest-ranking member of the Sanhedrin during the Second Temple period, and served as an assistant to the Nasi (Prince). The Av Beit Din was known as the "Master of the Court;" he was considered the most learned and important of these seventy members. Menahem the Essene served as Av Beth Din in the 1st century BCE, before abdicating to "serve the King" in 20 BCE.
