Ying Hope
Ying L.K. Hope Professional Engineer, P. Eng. (1923 – November 12, 2007) was a Chinese Canadian politician, Toronto District School Board, Toronto Public School Board trustee and Metro Toronto Councillor and Toronto Alderman. Hope's grandparents, great uncles and aunts emigrated from China to Victoria, British Columbia in the 1880s as part of a wave of Chinese immigrants working on the railway and in mines. His father and uncle established "Wo Hope Tailoring" ("peace and unity" in Chinese). John Adams (October 30, 1735 – July 4, 1826) was a Founding Father and the second president of the United States from 1797 to 1801. Before his presidency, he was a leader of the American Revolution that achieved independence from Great Britain. The Chinese head tax was a fixed fee charged to every Chinese person entering Canada. The head tax was first levied after the Canadian parliament passed the ''Chinese Immigration Act'' of 1885 and it was meant to discourage Chinese people from entering Canada after the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). The tax was abolished by the ''Chinese Immigration Act'' of 1923, which outright prevented all Chinese immigration except for that of business people, clergy, educators, students, and some others. Spadina (electoral District)
Spadina was a Canadian electoral district that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1935 to 1988. It covered a portion of the western-central Toronto, Ontario. Its name comes from the Spadina Avenue, which runs through the heart of the riding. It was formed in 1933 from portions of Toronto Northeast, Toronto Northwest, Toronto West Centre, and Toronto South. Its boundaries changed repeatedly over the years, when it created it stretched far north to the edge of the city boundaries. As this northern portion of became more populated it was split off into other ridings. Jim Renwick (Canadian Politician)
James Alexander Renwick (November 29, 1917 – November 28, 1984) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a New Democratic member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1964 to 1984 who represented the downtown Toronto riding of Riverdale. He served as president of the Federal New Democratic Party from 1967 to 1969. He died while still in office. Background Renwick came from a relatively privileged background. He attended Trinity College at the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School, and enlisted with the Canadian Army during World War II. He reached the rank of captain, and became an adjutant with the Canadian Armored Corps in the 28th Armored Regiment. He was captured by the Nazis at Falaise following D-Day, and was a prisoner-of-war for a time. After returning to Canada, Renwick finished his legal studies in 1947 and became a corporate lawyer.
