A geological formation, or simply formation, is a body of rock having a consistent set of physical characteristics (lithology) that distinguishes it from adjacent bodies of rock, and which occupies a particular position in the layers of rock exposed in a geographical region (the stratigraphic column). ''Cephalotes hispaniolicus'' is an extinct species of ant in the subfamily Myrmicinae known from a single Middle Miocene fossil found in amber on Hispaniola. At the time of description ''C. hispaniolicus'' was one of six ant species placed in the ''Cephalotes'' ''multispinosus'' clade. History and classification ''C. hispaniolicus'' was described from a solitary fossil worker caste ant which was preserved as an Inclusion (mineral), inclusion in a transparent chunk of Dominican amber. The amber was produced by the extinct tree ''Hymenaea protera'', which formerly grew on Hispaniola, across northern South America and up to southern Mexico. The specimen was collected from an unidentified amber mine in the Dominican Republic. The amber dates from the Burdigalian age of the Miocene, being recovered from sections of the La Toca Formation in the Cordillera Septentrional and the Yanigua Formation in the Cordillera Oriental (Hispaniola), Cordillera Oriental. Marl Formations
Marl is an earthy material rich in carbonate minerals, clays, and silt. When hardened into rock, this becomes marlstone. It is formed in marine or freshwater environments, often through the activities of algae. Marl makes up the lower part of the cliffs of Dover, and the Channel Tunnel follows these marl layers between France and the United Kingdom. Marl is also a common sediment in post-glacial lakes, such as the marl ponds of the northeastern United States. Lagunitas Formation, Cuba
The Lagunitas Formation is a geologic formation in Cuba. The open marine, fluvio- deltaic and lagoonal claystones, limestones and conglomerates preserve fossils dating back to the Early Miocene period. Among others, the fossil primate '' Paralouatta marianae'', the largest primate of the Miocene New World, was found in the formation. Based on microfossils, the age has been determined as Burdigalian. Description The type locality designated by Popov is a small outcrop located east of Trinidad, on the highway linking Trinidad and Banao. The youngest lithostratigraphic unit overlain by Lagunitas is the Oligocene Las Cuevas Formation in the type section.
