Yallourn
Yallourn, Victoria was a company town in Victoria, Australia built between 1921 and 1961 to house employees of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), who operated the nearby Yallourn Power Station complex. However, expansion of the adjacent open-pit mining, open-cut lignite, brown coal mine led to the closure and removal of the town in the 1980s. Whilst the township no longer exists, at the , the adjacent region classified as Yallourn had a population of 251. Design The town was planned by A.R. La Gerche, the SECV's Architect. It is sometimes mistakenly thought to have been designed by Walter Burley Griffin, who planned Canberra, Australia's capital city. The design of Yallourn incorporated lessons learnt from the early UK garden cities of Welwyn Garden City and Letchworth Garden City inspired by the work of Ebenezer Howard. Newborough-Yallourn United SC
Newborough-Yallourn United SC is a soccer club based in Newborough, Victoria, Newborough, Victoria (state), Victoria, Australia. The club was founded in 1923 as ''Yallourn Soccer Club'' before relocating in 1980 and subsequently merging with ''Newborough Soccer Club'' (themselves formed in 1955) in 1995. The club currently competes in Latrobe Valley Soccer League and is regularly referred to as NYU or The Combine. The club's biggest claim to fame is that it was the first non-metropolitan club to be crowned Victorian league champions, winning the 1951 Victorian Division 1 title - the equivalent of NPL Victoria today - just four years after joining the competition. Yallourn Power Station
The Yallourn Power Station, now owned by EnergyAustralia is located in the Latrobe Valley of Victoria, Australia, beside the Latrobe River. Yallourn Power Station was a complex of six brown coalfired thermal power stations built progressively from the 1920s to the 1960s; all except one have now been decommissioned. Today, only the Yallourn W plant remains. It is the second largest power station in Victoria, supplying about 8.4TWh in 2024, or around 16% of Victoria's electricity and 4% of the National Electricity Market. The adjacent open cut brown coal mine is the largest open cut coal mine in Australia, with reserves sufficient to meet the projected needs of the power station to 2028. On 10 March 2021, EnergyAustralia announced that it will close the Yallourn Power Station in mid-2028, four years ahead of schedule, and instead build a 350 megawatt battery in the Latrobe Valley by the end of 2026. Yallourn North
Yallourn North is a town in the City of Latrobe, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. It is approximately eight kilometres north-east of Moe, Victoria, Moe, and 146 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. Prior to 1947 Yallourn North was known as "Brown Coal Mine". The Post Office opened on 3 September 1917 as Brown Coal Mine and was renamed Yallourn North in 1947. This tiny hilltop town contains many churches, including the only Serbian Orthodox Church and Mosque in the region. Sports available are Australian rules football, cricket, bowls, lawn bowls and carpet bowls, netball and angling. There is a Social Golf Club, and pistol club. Latrobe Valley Soccer League
Latrobe Valley Soccer League (LVSL) is a soccer league encompassing much of Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley in ( Victoria. As the region with the National Soccer League's only regional participant, as well as being home to multiple Victorian state champions, the LVSL is widely acknowledged as being one of the strongest soccer leagues in regional Australia. Yallourn Railway Line
Two different railway lines serviced Yallourn during its existence. Both were broad gauge branches from the Gippsland line in Victoria, Australia. The first was a line branching from a junction at Hernes Oak, situated between Moe and Morwell, which was in service from 1922 to 1955. The second Yallourn railway line junctioned at Moe, and was used between 1953 and 1986. Operated by the Victorian Railways and successors, the lines served the Yallourn Power Station, the associated open cut brown coal mine, and a briquette factory complex, all operated by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), as well as the adjacent company town of Yallourn. State Electricity Commission Of Victoria
The State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SEC, SECV or ECV) is a government-owned electricity company in Victoria, Australia. Originally established to generate electricity from the state's reserves of brown coal, the SEC gradually monopolised most aspects of the Victorian electricity industry, before being broken up and largely privatised in the 1990s. After several decades of dormancy, it was revived in 2023 to invest in renewable energy and electricity storage, storage markets. Newborough, Victoria
Newborough is a town in the Latrobe Valley in Victoria, Australia which shares a border to its west, mostly along the Narracan Creek, with the town of Moe. It can be divided into three areas, Old Newborough, East Newborough and North Newborough. The latter two areas were developed by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in the 1950s as residential housing for workers at the nearby Yallourn coal mining, power generation and briquette making works. Newborough now has a higher than average proportion of retirees and aged residents, and it has been suggested that it owes its generally quiet character to this fact. The Gippsland railway line (formerly known as the Orbost railway line) is a railway line serving the Latrobe Valley and Gippsland regions of Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. Latrobe Valley
The Latrobe Valley is an inland geographical district and urban area of the Gippsland region in the state of Victoria, Australia. The traditional owners are the Brayakaulung of the Gunai nation. The district lies east of Melbourne and nestled between the Strzelecki Ranges to the south and the Baw Baw Ranges, part of the Great Dividing Range, to the north. Moe ( ) is a town in the Latrobe Valley in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. It is approximately east of the central business district of Melbourne, due south of the peak of Mount Baw Baw in the Great Dividing Range and features views of the Baw Baw Ranges to the north and Strzelecki Ranges to the south. The 1952 VFL season was the 56th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 19 April until 27 September, and comprised a 19-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Geelong Football Club for the fifth time and second time consecutively.
