Xinyao
''Xinyao'' ( zh, s=wikt:新謠, 新謠, p=Xīnyáo) is a genre of songs originating from Singapore. It is a contemporary Mandarin vocal genre that emerged between the late 1970s to 1980s. ''Xinyao'' songs are typically composed and sung by Singaporeans, although there are exceptions: one of the most notable being Eric Moo, who is not Singaporean but Malaysian, yet is considered one of the pioneers of the movement. Recurring themes of songs include friendships or teenage love. ''Xinyao'' is a Chinese language, Chinese noun comprising two Chinese characters: ''xīn'' (新) which is an abbreviation for Singapore, and ''yáo'' (謠) for song. The term xinyao is an abbreviation of a longer name, 新加坡年轻人自创歌謠. Early pioneers of the genre include Wong Hong Mok, Liang Wern Fook, Dawn Gan, Eric Moo and Billy Koh. The Songs We Sang
''The Songs We Sang'' is a 2015 Singaporean documentary directed by Eva Tang. It is about ''xinyao'', Singaporean folk music that was popular in the 1980s. Plot The documentary covered the last years of Nanyang University and how it affected the Chinese educated students who graduated from there. It also documented how the poetry club in Nanyang University, before the closure of the institution, branched out to song writing, influenced by Taiwan ''minyao'' (民谣), a Taiwanese folk songs movement in the 1970s and their school campus songs (校园民歌). The history of was then chronicled from its birth in educational institutes to local success and then to commercial success. Liang Wern Fook
Dr Liang Wern Fook (; born 1964 in Singapore) is a Cantonese Singaporean writer, musician, singer and researcher in Chinese literature and pedagogy. He was one of the pioneer figures in '' xinyao'' (Singaporean Chinese folk songs) movement in the 1980s and 1990s. Early life and education Liang grew up in a music-loving household, along with his two younger siblings. His father, a journalist, and his mother, an acupuncturist, were always playing the records of singers like Bai Guang and Zhou Xuan. Liang received his primary and secondary school education at Catholic High School. He started taking piano lessons at the age of 10, and went on to attain a Grade 8 certificate. Liang wrote his first song, "Write A Song For You", at the age of 16, and he became more prolific once he started attending Hwa Chong Junior College (now Hwa Chong Institution), often performing with schoolmates in addition to heading the student council and Chinese society drama club. Dawn Gan
Yan Liming (; 15 April 1963 – 22 September 2018), also known as Dawn Gan, was a Singaporean ''xinyao'' singer. She was one of the pioneer ''xinyao'' singers in Singapore. Early life and education Gan was born on 15 April 1963 and studied at River Valley High School and National Junior College. Career In 1984, Gan signed a five-year contract with the Tony Wong Company as a singer, one of the first two solo ''xinyao'' recording singers. Gan sang the theme song, ''Youth 1 2 3'', for the 1986 Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) Channel 8 drama ''The Happy Trio''. In September 1986, the Tony Wong Company ceased operations, and agreed to release Gan from her contract ahead of a clause which abrogated the contract if the company did not release a new album for her within a year from her last release. Eric Moo
Eric Moo Chii Yuan (, born 9 February 1963), better known as Eric Moo or Wu Qixian, is a Malaysian Chinese singer-songwriter and record producer. Personal life Moo was born in Mambang Diawan, Kampar, Perak, Kampar, Perak on 9 February 1963. He moved to Singapore with his family when he was 8 years old. Moo is married to Taiwanese people, Taiwanese model Pang Meijun and they have two daughters. Moo's eldest daughter Yonghuan is attending Berklee College of Music. Career Moo studied in Shuqun Primary School, The Chinese High School (Singapore), The Chinese High School and Jurong Junior College in Singapore. SPOP Sing!
''SPOP Sing!'' () is a Chinese singing reality competition broadcast by Mediacorp Channel 8. Season 1 premiered on 9 August after the broadcast of National Day Parade and ended on the live finale on 4 November at Padang. During the live finals, 18-year-old Singapore Polytechnic student Jarrell Huang (17 at the time of his audition) was announced the winner of ''SPOP Sing!'', and 21-year-old LASALLE College of the Arts student Marcus Tay was declared as a runner-up. Development The show was first revealed to the public on 22 April 2018 during the broadcast of ''Star Awards 2018'' with a teaser clip uploaded to Toggle, aimed to promote the Chinese culture, the music genre of mandopop and xinyao, and paying tribute to local singing talents of Singapore. Kallang Theatre
Kallang Theatre is a 1,744-seat theatre in Kallang, Singapore. Located at 1A Stadium Walk, Singapore 397689 within the Singapore Sports Hub, beside Leisure Park Kallang and Stadium MRT station, Kallang Theatre is managed by Sport Singapore. History Kallang Theatre was opened on 7 April 1978. Owned by Chong Gay Theatres, the theatre was a cinema with 2,400 seats but opened with 2,000 seats with 400 seats to be built later. It was the largest cinema of Southeast Asia at that time. The theatre was five storeys high and cost to build. In 1981, the theatre was bought over by the Government of Singapore for due to the need of a medium size theatre in Singapore. ''Project SuperStar'' () is a singing talent search competition organised by MediaCorp and broadcast on Channel U in Singapore. Project SuperStar was organised to uncover and develop young talent in Mandarin pop in Singapore. Closely modelled after the Pop Idol, 24 contestants were selected to enter the Quarter Finals of the competition. For both seasons, it was hosted by Quan Yi Fong and Jeff Wang. ''Campus SuperStar'' is a Singaporean reality television singing competition to find new singing talent, contested by aspiring singers drawn from public auditions.
