World Wide Wargames
World Wide Wargames, or 3W, was a wargame company founded in 1977 (as UKW, UK Wargamer) by Keith Poulter.The Wargamer Issue 9, page 10 History 3W Inc, also known as World Wide Wargames, was a wargame company that began publishing in 1977. Originally launched in England, the company moved later to California. In addition to producing boxed wargames, 3W published the magazine ''The Wargamer (magazine), The Wargamer''. TSR (company), TSR published the magazine ''Strategy & Tactics'' from 1983 – 1987 and then sold the rights to 3W, who published the magazine from #112 (June, 1987) to #139, and when founder Keith Poulter left the business, 3W sold ''Strategy & Tactics'' to Decision Games. Keith Poulter
Keith Poulter is a publisher and an editor who has worked on both magazines and Wargaming, wargames. Career Keith Poulter taught political science. In 1977 he founded the wargame company UKW, UK Wargamer, which by summer 1978 was better known as World Wide Wargames (3W (company), 3W). In 1980, a commentator said the creation of the company and its magazine ''The Wargamer (magazine), The Wargamer'' was "the most important development in British wargaming for years", and noted the quality of games produced in the magazine. Following a period of declining subscriptions for the magazine ''Strategy & Tactics'', 3W (company), 3W acquired the publication from #112 (June 1987) to #139 (December 1990). Keith Poulter was the editor from issues #112 to #119, Ty Bomba from #120 to #129, Jim Dunnigan from #130 to #139. ''The Defense of Rorke's Drift'' is a board wargame published by World Wide Wargames (3W) in 1991 that simulates the Battle of Rorke's Drift, when forces of the Zulu Kingdom besieged a small outpost of British soldiers during the Anglo-Zulu War. A second game, ''The Boer War'', was included in the box. Background Seeking to create a large British colony in South Africa that would encompass the hitherto independent Zulu Kingdom as well as the independent Boer states of the Republic of South Africa, British High Commissioner to South Africa Bartle Frere sent a provocative ultimatum to Zulu king Cetshwayo. When this was rejected, Frere sent a British task force to invade the Zulu Kingdom. The Zulu, although outgunned, showed discipline and defeated the British force at the Battle of Isandlwana. Description ''Ancients'' is a two-player wargame with rules for low-complexity tactical combat. The game box includes four map sheets to be used with various battles. Various options allow for the inclusion of exotic items such as chariots or elephants. The game includes over 60 scenarios for historical battles from Ancient Greece to the Renaissance. Each scenario only lasts seven turns. Gameplay Combat uses a simple alternating system of turns: the first player removes leaders from the board, then moves units. ''Chinese Civil War'' is a board wargame by World Wide Wargames (3W) in 1979 that simulates the Chinese Civil War between the Kuomintang of Chiang Kai-shek and the Communists of Mao Zedong. Description ''Chinese Civil War'' is a two-player board wargame where one player controls the Kuomintang, and the other player controls the Communists. Gameplay The game uses an alternating "I Go, You Go" system where the first player adds reinforcements, moves and attacks, then the second player has the same opportunities, completing one game turn.
