Ancients (board Game)
''Ancients'' is a board wargame published by Good Industries in 1986 that simulates various historical battles in pre-gunpowder settings. Description ''Ancients'' is a two-player wargame with rules for low-complexity tactical combat. The game box includes four map sheets to be used with various battles. Various options allow for the inclusion of exotic items such as chariots or elephants. The game includes over 60 scenarios for historical battles from Ancient Greece to the Renaissance. Each scenario only lasts seven turns. Gameplay Combat uses a simple alternating system of turns: the first player removes leaders from the board, then moves units. The second player's missile troops fire, then the first player's melee troops attack. Any units that are his are disorganized and cannot attack. A board wargame is a wargame with a set playing surface or board game, board, as opposed to being played on a computer or in a more free-form playing area as in miniatures games. ''Squad Leader'' is a tactical level board war game originally published by Avalon Hill in 1977. It was designed by John Hill and simulates on infantry combat in Europe during World War II. One of the most complex war games of its time, ''Squad Leader'' is the natural extension of the trend towards greater realism (and hence complexity) initiated by several earlier games, including Avalon Hill's own '' PanzerBlitz'' and '' Panzer Leader''. Those two earlier games were slightly larger in scope, with counters representing platoons and map hexes measuring 250 metres across, compared to Squad Leader's 40 meter hexes and squad sized units. ''Berg's Review of Games'' ( ''BROG'') was a publication started by game designer Richard Berg. The magazine, which featured reviews of Wargame (video games), video wargames and board wargames, debuted in 1991. Content In 1980, Richard Berg, then working as a game designer for Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI), started writing and editing reviews of wargames, which SPI published as ''Richard Berg's Review of Games''. It began as a two-page mimeographed newsletter, published twice a month for 25 issues. It then appeared in the pages of SPI's ''Strategy & Tactics'' until late 1985. In the fall of 1991, Berg became editor of a self-published fanzine, the similarly titled ''Berg's Review of Games'' (or ''BROG''). Richard Harvey Berg (1943 – July 26, 2019) was a prolific American wargame designer. He was inducted into the Charles Roberts Awards Hall of Fame in 1987. Early life, army, student and lawyer Richard Berg was born in New York City. At age 21, he entered the United States Army, and served from 1967 to 1969, where he was assigned to be the musical director of the Army Theater in Frankfurt, West Germany. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Union College in Schenectady, New York, majoring in Asian History, and then earned a Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School. From 1971 to 1988, he worked as a criminal defense attorney in private practice and for the Legal Aid Society. He also worked as a media communications consultant, actor, director, author, lyricist, and composer, as well as working briefly for the Internal Revenue Service. ''Fire & Movement: The Forum of Conflict Simulation'' was a magazine devoted to wargames, both traditional board wargames and computer wargames. It was founded by Rodger MacGowan in 1975, and began publication the following year. In February 1982, Fire & Movement was acquired by Steve Jackson Games. In January 1985 the magazine was sold again to Diverse Talents Inc. (DTI). In 1988, World Wide Wargames (also known as 3W) acquired Diverse Talents Inc. (DTI), publisher of ''Fire & Movement'', '' Battleplan'' and '' Space Gamer'', leading to a complete merger of the two companies. 3W then continued on to publish four gaming magazines simultaneously.
