Encyclopedia Of Popular Music
''The Encyclopedia of Popular Music'' is an encyclopedia created in 1989 by Colin Larkin. It is the "modern man's" equivalent of the '' Grove Dictionary of Music'', which Larkin describes in less than flattering terms.''The Times'', ''The Knowledge'', Christmas edition, 22 December 2007 – 4 January 2008. It is published by the Oxford University Press and was described by ''The Times'' as "the standard against which all others must be judged". History of the encyclopedia Larkin believed that rock music and popular music were at least as significant historically as classical music, and as such, should be given definitive treatment and properly documented. ''The Encyclopedia of Popular Music'' is the result. In 1989, Larkin sold his half of the publishing company Scorpion Books to finance his ambition to publish an encyclopedia of popular music. Aided by a team of initially 70 contributors, he set about compiling the data in a pre-internet age, "relying instead on information ...

Kris Peters of ''Heavy Mag'' wrote "musically the whole album is brilliant, with enough variations within the rock genre to keep it fresh and exuberant" and that ''Seven'' is "classic stadium rock with big hooks and accessible music, but damn isn't it good to hear again?" Rob Smith of ''Ultimate Classic Rock'' stated, "That the group has made an album as rock-solid as Seven is a testament to their collective power and virt ...

Karma (Winger Album)
''Karma'' is the fifth studio album by American rock band Winger. It was released on October 16, 2009, in Europe and October 27, 2009, in the United States. Background The inspiration for a new Winger came about at the end of 2008, when frontman Kip Winger had the vision to meld the more commercial, heavier and song-oriented approach of the first two albums with the more "thinking-man" approach of the last two studio records. Kip Winger said of the title that "We were discussing the very interesting path the band has had and we have all been through so much together. So we went for ''Karma'' as this is a word that truly sums up the experience of being in the band." When questioned about the album, Kip Winger stated: "When the chance came up to do a new Winger record, I envisioned an upbeat totally rocking record that was a cross between the first Winger album and ''Pull''. So Reb and I sat down and wrote all the music in a month or so. I worked for six months to finish i ...

IV (Winger Album)
''IV'' is the fourth studio album by American rock band Winger, and the first since their 1993 album ''Pull''. Background According to frontman Kip Winger, one morning he "just woke up and heard the new Winger record" in his head, knowing just what he wanted to do with it. It was released in October 2006 on Frontiers Records. The album is the most musically progressive album of Winger's career. Lyrically, much of the album is sung from the perspective of U.S. soldiers stationed overseas. Kip Winger was inspired to do this after performing solo shows at U.S. military bases, and being touched by the stories of the soldiers he met. The album cover, showing a U.S. soldier being watched over by angels, was drawn by comic book artist Ethan Van Sciver, known for his work at DC and Marvel Comics. Kip Winger was introduced to Van Sciver by a mutual friend in Florida. Honors In 2009 Kip Winger was presented by U.S. General Harold Cross with an honorary plaque and U.S. flag that had f ...

Pull (Winger Album)
''Pull'' is the third studio album by American rock band Winger. The album was released in 1993 by Atlantic Records. Replacing Beau Hill, Kip Winger took the production reins with the help of Mike Shipley, who had previously worked on Def Leppard's 1992 album, Adrenalize. With Winger and Shipley at the helm, the album's production was on a considerable budget and marked a significant change in Winger's sound, eschewing their glam metal anthems prevalent in their first two albums for a harder and more aggressive style of music with socio-political leanings on tracks like "Blind Revolution Mad", "In for the Kill" and "Who's the One". In terms of sales figures the album was not as successful as the two first albums, peaking at #83 on Billboard's Album chart. However, the lead single "'' Down Incognito''" reached #15 on the Mainstream rock Billboard chart. ''Pull'' was recorded by Winger as a trio, as guitarist/keyboardist Paul Taylor left the band after the '' In the Heart o ...
