Windley Key
Windley Key is an island in the upper Florida Keys in Monroe County, Florida, United States. U.S. 1 (the Overseas Highway) crosses it at approximately mile markers 84–85.5, between Plantation Key and Upper Matecumbe Key. All of the key is within the Village of Islamorada as of November 4, 1997, when it was incorporated. The key is home to Theater of the Sea, a popular tourist attraction since 1946. It also contains a Florida State Park Service geological site, and the popular Holiday Isle resort. History Prior to the building of the Overseas Railroad, the site consisted of two separate islands known as the Umbrella Keys. Railway construction required the intervening space to be filled; it then became known as Windley Key, after an early settler. Several quarries operated there for many years, supplying building stone locally known as "keystone". The railway station on Windley Key was called Quarry. Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park
Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park is a Florida State Park located at mile marker 85.5 on US 1 near Islamorada. It was a former quarry used by Henry Flagler Henry Morrison Flagler (January 2, 1830 – May 20, 1913) was an American industrialist and a founder of Standard Oil, which was first based in Ohio. Following the railroad's completion, it was a source of decorative stone pieces called Keystone. Now on display are exposed sections of fossilized coral and some of the original quarry machinery. Islamorada
Islamorada (also sometimes Isla Morada) is an incorporated village in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It is located directly between Miami and Key West on five islands— Tea Table Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Windley Key, and Plantation Key—in the Florida Keys. As of the 2020 census, the village had a population of 7,107, up from 6,119 in 2010. History The name "Islamorada" (), spelled ''isla morada'' in Spanish, "purple island", came from early Spanish explorers in the area. The 1935 Labor Day hurricane was an extremely powerful and devastating Atlantic hurricane that struck the southeastern United States in early September 1935. For several decades, it was the most intense Atlantic hurricane on record in terms of barometric pressure until being surpassed by Hurricane Gilbert in 1988; the strongest Atlantic hurricane on record in terms of 1-minute sustained winds (surpassed by Hurricane Allen in 1980); and the strongest at landfall by 1-minute sustained winds (tied with Hurricane Dorian in 2019). Overseas Railroad
The Overseas Railroad (also known as Florida Overseas Railroad, the Overseas Extension, and Flagler's Folly) was an extension of the Florida East Coast Railway to Key West, a city located beyond the end of the Florida peninsula. Work on the line started in 1905 and it operated from 1912 to 1935, when it was partially destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane. Some of the remaining infrastructure was used for the Overseas Highway. Plantation Key is an island in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It is located in the upper Florida Keys on U.S. 1 (or the Overseas Highway), between Key Largo and Windley Key. Overseas Highway
The Overseas Highway is a highway carrying U.S. Route 1 (US 1) through the Florida Keys to Key West. Large parts of it were built on the former right-of-way of the Overseas Railroad, the Key West Extension of the Florida East Coast Railway. Completed in 1912, the Overseas Railroad was heavily damaged and partially destroyed in the 1935 Labor Day hurricane. The Florida East Coast Railway was financially unable to rebuild the destroyed sections, so the roadbed and remaining bridges were sold to the state of Florida for $640,000.
