The Wimbledon Internationale sponsored by Embassy was an individual motorcycle speedway event that was hosted annually at Wimbledon Stadium in London, England. History The event was first run during July 1961, as compensation to the British public for losing the rights to host the Speedway World Championship every year. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Ivan Mauger
Ivan Gerald Mauger (4 October 1939 – 16 April 2018; last name pronounced "Major") was a New Zealand motorcycle speedway rider. He won a record six World Championships (Finals), a feat equalled only with the inclusion of the Speedway GP Championships by Tony Rickardsson of Sweden. In 2010, Mauger was named an FIM Legend for his motorcycling achievements. Career United Kingdom Mauger first arrived in the UK as a 17-year-old aboard the SS ''Rangitoto'', which docked at Tilbury in 1957, with his teenage bride Raye, renting a one-bedroom flat in Wimbledon around the corner from Plough Lane where Ronnie Moore and Barry Briggs were the star names. Michael Lee (speedway Rider)
Michael Andrew Lee (born 11 December 1958) is a British former international speedway rider who won the World Championship in 1980. He earned 72 international caps for the England national speedway team. Career Born in Cambridge, England, Lee began his professional speedway career in 1975 with Boston Barracudas (on loan from parent club King's Lynn Stars) in the second division of speedway in the United Kingdom, the National League. In his first season, he recorded an impressive average points score of 9.13, he also rode part-time for his parent club King's Lynn. In 1976, Lee moved full-time to British League team King's Lynn and finished the season with an average of 9.22, he was also the British Junior Champion that year. Chris Morton
Christopher John Morton, MBE (born 22 July 1956) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned 115 international caps for the England national speedway team and 7 caps for the Great Britain team, making him the third most capped England & British rider of all-time. Career Born in Davyhulme, Lancashire, he rode bikes from a young age at the farm of Peter Collins' parents. Morton made his debut for Ellesmere Port Gunners (on loan from Belle Vue Aces) on 15 May 1973. Malcolm Simmons (speedway Rider)
Malcolm Simmons (20 March 1946 – 25 May 2014) was a motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned 73 international caps for the England national speedway team and five caps for the Great Britain team. Career Simmons was born in Tonbridge, Kent. Philip John Crump (born 9 February 1952 in Mildura, Victoria) is an Australian former motorcycle speedway rider. who attained third place in the 1976 World Championship. He also won the 1976 Speedway World Team Cup with Australia in the same year. Career Australia Crump who gained the nicknames Crumpy and the Mildura Marvel, started racing speedway in his late teens at his local Mildura track Olympic Park Speedway. He won his first Australian Solo Championship in 1975 at the Sydney Showground Speedway and would go on to win another three national championships in 1979 and 1984 at Olympic Park and in 1988, at the Riverview Speedway in Murray Bridge. Raymond Wilson (born 12 March 1947) is a British former international motorcycle speedway rider. He was World Pairs Champion in 1972 and British Speedway Champion in 1973, and was also England Team Captain for five years in the early 1970s. Peter Collins (speedway Rider)
Peter Spencer Collins (born 24 March 1954) is an English former speedway rider who spent his whole career (1971–1986) with the Belle Vue Aces, the team he supported as a child. During his career, Peter Collins won 10 World Championships in speedway competition (one Individual, four Pairs and five World Team Cups) making him the most successful British rider in history. At retirement he had earned 118 international caps for the England national speedway team (a record) and 9 caps for Great Britain. Tommy Jansson
Per Tommy Jansson (2 October 1952 – 20 May 1976) was a motorcycle speedway rider. He was one of Sweden's most exciting speedway prospects in the 1970s but was killed in the Swedish Final a World Championship Qualifying Round meeting. He earned 52 caps for the Sweden national speedway team. Speedway career Jansson initially appeared in the UK on 23 July 1970 while touring with the Young Sweden team in a British League Division Two test series against Young England. He rode at Teesside, scoring 10 points. He was injured in the second test match, at Workington, the following night, and he returned to Sweden. He came to England in 1971 to ride for the Wembley Lions making his debut on 9 April, in an away match against Wolverhampton, where he scored 6 points. Anders Michanek
Anders Michanek (born 30 May 1943) is a Swedish Speedway rider. In 1974 he won the Speedway World Championship in his Swedish homeland with a maximum score of 15 points. He earned 101 caps for the Sweden national speedway team. Career Michanek was born on 30 May 1943 in Stockholm, Sweden. He had a successful career riding in the British League. He initially signed for the Long Eaton Archers in 1967 before going on to ride for various clubs including Leicester Lions, Newcastle Diamonds, Reading Racers, Ipswich Witches and Cradley Heathens. Ole Olsen (speedway Rider)
Ole Bjarne Olsen (born 16 November 1946) is a Danish former professional motorcycle speedway rider. He won the Speedway World Championship three times, in 1971, 1975, and 1978. He also won the World Long track motorcycle racing, Long Track Championship in 1973. In 1979 Olsen won Speedway World Pairs Championship with Hans Nielsen (speedway rider), Hans Nielsen. In 1978, 1981 and 1983 Olsen was the captain of Denmark national speedway team, Denmark's winning Speedway World Team Cup teams, while also finishing second in 1979 and 1982. Garry Middleton
Garry David Middleton (born 19 July 1948 Corowa, New South Wales - 23 November 1994) was an Australian motorcycle speedway rider. Career He first came to Britain in 1967 and rode for a short time with the Belle Vue Aces and the King's Lynn Stars before getting a permanent ride with the Wimbledon Dons. He stayed with the Dons for the 1968 season, but in 1969 he moved to the Hackney Hawks. He rode for the Hawks from 1969 until 1971. In 1972, he moved to the Oxford Rebels following a contract dispute with promoter Len Silver. Middleton also raced as an International rider for Australia. After a season with Coventry Bees in 1973, the Midlands club were unable to locate him for the 1974 season.
