Wim Thomassen
Willem "Wim" Thomassen Nickname "Dux". (3 October 1909 – 16 June 2001) was a Dutch politician of the Labour Party (Netherlands), Labour Party (PvdA). Thomassen was born in Amsterdam. He was a schoolteacher and during World War II imprisoned by the Germans in Amsterdam from 1943 until January 1944. After the war he was secretary of the Nederlandse Volksbeweging, Dutch People's Movement from August 1945 until July 1946. On behalf of the Labour Party he was a member of the House of Representatives (Netherlands), House of Representatives from July 1946 until July 1948. Hereafter he was mayor of three municipalities: Zaandam (1948–1958), Enschede (1958–1965), and at last Rotterdam (1965–1974). The Social Democratic Workers' Party (, SDAP) was a socialism, socialist political party in the Netherlands existing from 1894 to 1946. Originating from a split in the prior Social Democratic League, the party was a predecessor of the current Social democracy, social democratic Labour Party (Netherlands), Labour Party. History 1893–1904 The SDAP was founded by members of the Social Democratic League (SDB) after a conflict between anarchist and reformism, reformist factions. During the SDB party conference of 1893 in Groningen, a majority voted to stop participating in the elections. North Holland
North Holland (, ) is a Provinces of the Netherlands, province of the Netherlands in the northwestern part of the country. It is located on the North Sea, north of South Holland and Utrecht (province), Utrecht, and west of Friesland and Flevoland. As of January 2023, it had a population of about 2,952,000 and a total area of , of which is water. From the 9th to the 16th century, the area was an integral part of the County of Holland. During this period West Friesland (region), West Friesland was incorporated. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the area was part of the province of Holland and commonly known as the Noorderkwartier (English: "Northern Quarter"). Provincial Council (Netherlands)
The provincial council (, PS), also known as the States-Provincial, is the provincial parliament and legislative assembly in each of the provinces of the Netherlands. It is elected for each province simultaneously once every four years and has the responsibility for matters of sub-national or regional importance. The number of seats in a provincial council is proportional to its population. The provincial councils originated as Estates assemblies in the Middle Ages, hence the name 'States Provincial'. From 1813 to 1850, the noble members of the '' ridderschap'' chose one-third of the members of the provincial councils. Johan Rudolf Thorbecke's reforms and his 'Provinces Law' (''Provinciewet'') of 1850 brought this privilege to an end.
