Wilhelm Hecht
Wilhelm Hecht (28 March 1843 – early March 1920) was a German wood engraver and etcher. Biography Hecht was born in Ansbach, Bavaria. He studied the art of wood engraving with the printmaker Döring in Nuremberg from 1857 to 1859, continued his education in larger studios in Leipzig, Berlin and Stuttgart, and in 1868 opened his own studio in Munich. In 1885 he was called to Vienna to head the newly founded xylographic department of the k.u.k. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei (Imperial and Royal State Printing Office). At the same time, he was made professor for wood engraving at the School for Applied Arts (''Kunstgewerbeschule''), now the Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien ( University of Applied Arts Vienna). He retired to Graz, then to Munich, and in 1912 to Linz, where he died. Hecht applied his talent and skills particularly to copy-engraving. William I or Wilhelm I (german: Wilhelm Friedrich Ludwig; 22 March 1797 – 9 March 1888) was King of Prussia from 2 January 1861 and German Emperor from 18 January 1871 until his death in 1888. A member of the House of Hohenzollern, he was the first head of state of a united Germany. He was de facto head of state of Prussia from 1858, when he became regent for his brother Frederick William IV, whose death three years later would make him king. Under the leadership of William and his minister president Otto von Bismarck, Prussia achieved the unification of Germany and the establishment of the German Empire. The Broken Jug
''The Broken Jug'' (german: Der zerbrochne Krug, link=no, , also sometimes translated ''The Broken Pitcher'') is a comedy written by the German playwright Heinrich von Kleist. Kleist first conceived the idea for the play in 1801, upon looking at a copper engraving in Heinrich Zschokke's house entitled "Le juge, ou la cruche cassée". In 1803, challenged over his ability to write comedy, Kleist dictated the first three scenes of the play, though it was not completed until 1806. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe first staged the play in Weimar, where it premiered on 2 March 1808. Bernd Heinrich Wilhelm von Kleist (18 October 177721 November 1811) was a German poet, dramatist, novelist, short story writer and journalist.
