Western Showdown
The Western Showdown, known as the RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown for sponsorship reasons, is an annual international curling tournament held at the Credit Union iPlex in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The combined purse for both the men's and women's events is $100,000. It features some of the top teams in the world, as well as local Saskatchewan teams. The event began in 2021 as a men's only event, as a way to give back to the curling community in Swift Current for supporting the Swift Current Curling Club during the COVID-19 pandemic in Saskatchewan. It featured 24 teams, and a $50,000 purse. A women's event was added in 2022, but held two weeks before the men's event. The women's event featured 30 teams and a purse of $45,000, while the men's event featured 16 teams and a purse of $36,000. In 2023, the events were combined. Swift Current
Swift Current is the sixth-largest city in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It is situated along the Trans-Canada Highway west of Moose Jaw, and east of Medicine Hat, Alberta. As of 2024, Swift Current has an estimated population of 18,430, a growth of 1.32% from the 2016 census population of 16,604. The city is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of Swift Current No. 137. History Swift Current's history began with Swift Current Creek which originates at Cypress Hills and traverses of prairie and empties into the South Saskatchewan River at Lake Diefenbaker. The creek was a camp for First Nations for centuries. The name of the creek comes from the Cree, who called the South Saskatchewan River meaning "it flows swiftly". 2022 Western Showdown
The 2022 Western Showdown was held from October 13 to 31 at the Swift Current Curling Club in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The women's event, sponsored by RBC Dominion Securities, ran from October 13 to 16 and the men's event, sponsored by IG Wealth Management, ran from October 28 to 31. The total purse for the event is $45,000 on the women's side and $36,000 on the men's side. The event was sponsored by Curling Stadium, a streaming service provided by CurlingZone. All of the games were streamed on CurlingZone and the Swift Current Curling Club's YouTube page. Pablo Lachat
Pablo Lachat-Couchepin (born 20 October 2000) is a Swiss curler. He currently plays lead on Team Yannick Schwaller. Career Juniors Lachat won the Swiss Junior Curling Championships in 2020 with his team of Jan Klossner, Theo Short and Anthony Petoud. This qualified the team for the 2021 World Junior Curling Championships, however, the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Men's Alternate for Team de Cruz (2021–2022) Lachat was the alternate for the Swiss National Men's Curling Team skipped by Peter de Cruz at the 2021 World Men's Curling Championship. Sven Michel (curler)
Sven Michel (born 30 March 1988) is a Swiss curler from Matten. He is two-time World Champion in mixed doubles, and a European Men's Champion. Michel has also represented Switzerland at the 2014 and 2022 Winter Olympics. Career Juniors As a junior curler, Michel would represent Switzerland at the 2006 and 2007 World Junior Curling Championships, playing third for Christian von Gunten. Yannick Schwaller
Yannick Schwaller (born 31 March 1995 in Solothurn) is a Swiss curler from Recherswil. He currently skips his own team out of Geneva. Career Juniors Schwaller skipped the Swiss junior men's team at three straight World Junior Curling Championships. In 2014, he led his team of Reto Keller, throwing fourth stones, Patrick Witschonke, Michael Probst and Romano Meier to a 6–3 round robin record. They then beat Italy's Amos Mosaner in a tiebreaker to qualify for the playoffs. There, they defeated Canada's Braden Calvert and Norway's Eirik Mjøen in the 3 vs. 4 page playoff and semifinal games respectively, qualifying for the final. Benoît Schwarz-van Berkel
Benoît François Dominique Schwarz-van Berkel ( Schwarz; born 19 August 1991) is a Swiss curler. He currently throws fourth stones for skip Yannick Schwaller. He is a World Junior Champion, won a gold medal with the Swiss team at the 2013 European Curling Championships in Stavanger, and has also won a Grand Slam of Curling title at the 2018 Canadian Open. 2023 Western Showdown
The 2023 Nutrien Ag Solutions Western Showdown was held from December 6 to 10 at the Swift Current Curling Club in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The total purse for the event was $50,000 on the men's and women's sides. The event was sponsored by Curling Stadium, a streaming service provided by CurlingZone. All of the games were streamed on CurlingZone and the Swift Current Curling Club's YouTube page. In the men's final, Yannick Schwaller and his team from Geneva defeated Michael Brunner of Bern 8–6 in an all-Swiss championship game. Trailing by one at the half, Schwaller counted a four spot in the fifth end that allowed his team of Benoît Schwarz-van Berkel, Sven Michel and Pablo Lachat to control the rest of the match. Karrick Martin
Karrick Martin (born May 24, 1989, in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian curler. He currently plays lead on Team Kevin Koe. He is the son of 2010 Olympic champion skip Kevin Martin. Career Juniors Despite being the son of one of curling's greatest players, Martin only began curling at age 19, after playing hockey in high school for the Beaumont Chiefs. He joined the University of Alberta curling team and played in the 2008 CIS/CCA Curling Championships, throwing second stones for the team, which was skipped by Brandon Klassen. Bradley Thiessen (born March 1, 1990, in Edmonton, Alberta) is a Canadian curler. He was a long-time member of the Brendan Bottcher rink, throwing second stones for the team until 2022. With Bottcher, he won the 2021 Tim Hortons Brier and represented Canada at the 2021 World Men's Curling Championship. Tyler N. Tardi (born August 10, 1998 in Richmond, British Columbia) is a Canadian curling, curler originally from Cloverdale, British Columbia. He currently plays Second (curling), second on Team Kevin Koe.
