Wendover Will is a sign created for the Stateline Casino in West Wendover, Nevada in 1952. History Pat Denner was commissioned to design the sign for the Stateline Casino in 1952. Denner had just completed the Vegas Vic sign that was erected in 1951. The sign was constructed by The Young Electric Sign Company. Wendover Will was named after the town of Wendover and William Smith, who founded the Stateline Casino. The sign was intended to draw travelers in from US Highways 40 and 50, later known as Interstate 80. The sign includes of neon tubing. When driving east on Interstate 80 a caption under the sign reads, "This is the place," apparently in homage to Brigham Young. When driving west the caption reads, "Where the West begins". Stateline Casino
Stateline Hotel and Casino was located in West Wendover straddling the Nevada/Utah border. History The owner of Stateline Casino was William "Bill" Smith, who started his business in 1926 as a service station. In 1931 when gambling was legalized in Nevada, Smith expanded his service station adding a hotel and casino. The hotel and casino straddled the official border between Nevada and Utah. For a long time there was a white line across the floor. A patron could eat on the Utah side then step over the line and gamble in Nevada. It began business in 1931 when gambling became legal again in Nevada after being outlawed on October 1, 1910 at midnight. It closed in 1982 and reopened in 1985. In 2002 it was sold and renamed the Stateline Nugget. In 2004 it was sold again and renamed Wendover Nugget Hotel and Casino. Pat Denner (1924 – September 25, 2011) was the designer of Vegas Vic. Denner was raised in Salt Lake City, and studied commercial drawing and design at the Pratt Institute Pratt Institute is a private university with its main campus in Brooklyn, New York. It has an additional campus in Manhattan and an extension campus in Utica, New York at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute. The institute was founded in 18 ... in New York City. Vegas Vic is a neon sign portraying a cowboy which was erected on the exterior of Pioneer Club Las Vegas, The Pioneer Club in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States of America, USA in 1951. The sign was a departure in graphic design from typeface based neon signs, to the friendly and welcoming human form of a cowboy. The sign's human-like abilities of talking and waving its arm received an immediate acceptance as the unofficial welcoming sign, reproduced thousands of times over the years and all over the world. Stardust Sign
The Stardust Resort and Casino was a casino resort located on along the Las Vegas Strip in Winchester, Nevada. The Stardust was conceived by Tony Cornero, and construction began in 1954. Cornero died in 1955, and the project was taken over by his brother. The Stardust had numerous creditors, and construction was stopped in 1956, when the project ran out of money. Rella Factor, the wife of John Factor, bought the Stardust in January 1958, and finished construction. The Stardust opened on July 2, 1958, as the world's largest hotel. It had 1,065 rooms located across six motel structures, and included a casino. An adjacent hotel-casino, the Royal Nevada, became part of the Stardust in 1959, with its casino converted into Stardust convention space. A nine-story hotel addition was completed in 1964.
