Washington Transit System
Washington Transit System (WTS) is the primary provider of mass transportation in Washington, Indiana, with one bus route serving the region. As of 2019, the system provided 18,426 rides over 2,450 annual vehicle revenue hours with 1 bus. History Public transit in Washington began with streetcars in 1896, with the Washington Street Railway Co. Streetcar service was replaced with buses in 1935. In 2019, bus stop signage was added through a grant from the Glick Foundation and Purdue Extension. Service Washington Transit System operates one weekday deviated fixed-route in a loop around the city. Hours of operation for the system are Monday through Friday from 7:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. There is no service on Saturdays and Sundays. The service is fare-free. Washington, Indiana
Washington is a city in Daviess County, Indiana, United States. The population was 12,017 at the time of the 2020 census. The city is the county seat of Daviess County. It is also the principal city of the Washington, Indiana Micropolitan Statistical Area, which comprises all of Daviess County and had an estimated 2017 population of 31,648. History Washington was platted in 1815. It was named from Washington Township. The railroad was built through Washington in 1857. By 1889, it was a major depot and repair yard for the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad took over the line in 1893. During this time, the railroad employed over 1,000 workers. On November 17, 2013, an EF2 tornado tore through the western edge of the city destroying 20 homes and severely damaging 20 others. Daviess County, Indiana
Daviess County is a county in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 33,381. The county seat is Washington. About 15% of the county's population is Amish of Swiss origin, as of 2017. History After the American Revolutionary War was settled, the fledgling nation created the Northwest Territory, tentatively divided into two counties. The area that would become the state of Indiana in 1816 was included in the original Knox County. As the area became more settled, Knox was partitioned into smaller counties, the last of which was the present-day Daviess, authorized on February 2, 1818. The boundaries of Daviess were reduced on December 21, 1818, by the formation of Owen County, and on January 17, 1820, by the formation of Martin County.
