Wahgunyah
Wahgunyah is a town in northeastern Victoria, Australia. The town is on the southern bank of the Murray River, opposite Corowa, New South Wales, in the Shire of Indigo. Wahgunyah is north east of the state capital, Melbourne and west of Albury/Wodonga. At the , Wahgunyah had a population of 1,098. The name is believed to be an Aboriginal phrase meaning the resting place of crows. History Indigenous history The Aboriginal people which inhabit the region around Corowa and Wahgunyah are the Bangarang people.The tribe of Indigenous Australians that inhabited the Corowa area were called, in their own language, the Bangerang Tribe. Coreen & District Football League
The Coreen & District Football League was an Australian rules football competition in the Coreen, New South Wales, Coreen district of the Riverina in New South Wales, initially formed in 1909. The netball competition commenced in 1972 in line with the football fixture. The league was disbanded at the end of the 2007 season after 99 years of competition. Tallangatta & District Football League
The Tallangatta and District Football League (TDFL) is an Australian rules football competition in north-eastern Victoria (state), Victoria and the southern border area of the Riverina region of New South Wales. The clubs compete across four competitions, two of which are age restricted (under-17s and under-14s). Since 1980, the Tallangatta & District Netball Association (TDNA) has run in conjunction with TDFL. The clubs compete across six competitions, three of which are age restricted (18 & Under, 15 & Under, and 13 & Under). Wahgunyah Football / Netball Club is an Australian Rules Football club based in North Eastern Victoria that currently competes in the Tallangatta & District Football League. Club history The town of Wahgunyah has had an Australian rules football team since 1877 and Wahgunyah's first recorded match was against Corowa (a return match) on Saturday, 16 June 1877, played "on the hill" in Corowa, with Wahgunyah winning the first encounter by three goals to nothing. W Busch was the captain of Wahgunyah FC. Wahgunyah Railway Line
The Wahgunyah railway is a closed line in north-east Victoria, Australia. Branching off the main North East railway at Springhurst, it ran north-west to Wahgunyah. The Wahgunyah terminus was near the south bank of the Murray River, opposite the terminus of New South Wales Culcairn - Corowa railway line on the north bank, but there was no connecting rail bridge over the river. Because the two lines were of differing gauges, and the stations apart, there was no particular benefit in building a bridge to connect the two incompatible systems. History The line was opened as a whole from Springhurst to Wahgunyah in 1879. The passenger service was withdrawn on 13 April 1962, and was the last mixed train service to operate in Victoria. The Corowa Football Club, nicknamed the Spiders, was an Australian rules football club based in Corowa, New South Wales, that competed in the Ovens & Murray Football League. The club merged with the Wahgunyah Football Club on several occasions during its early history and as a result was also known as the Border United Football Club from time to time between 1877 and 1947. Corowa, New South Wales
Corowa is a town in the state of New South Wales in Australia. It is on the bank of the Murray River, the border between New South Wales and Victoria, opposite the Victorian town of Wahgunyah. It is the largest town in the Federation Council and was the administrative centre of the former Corowa Shire. The name could have derived from a Wiradjuri word referring to the curra pine that yielded gum used by Aboriginal people to fasten the heads of spears to the shafts. Another translation is "rocky river". There are two bridges over the Murray to Wahgunyah in Victoria: the heritage-listed John Foord Bridge and the Federation Bridge (opened on 2 April 2005). George Sutherland Smith
George Sutherland Smith (1830 – 18 August 1903) was a Scotsman who migrated to Australia, working as a builder and paddle-steamer captain. He turned to winemaking with considerable success, founding the All Saints winery in the Rutherglen region of Victoria.
