White Whale is an American indie rock band from Lawrence, Kansas, composed of former members of Butterglory, The Get Up Kids, and Thee Higher Burning Fire. They are signed to Merge Records and released their first full-length album WW1 (album), WW1 on July 25, 2006. Background When Matt Suggs, former lead singer of Butterglory, began touring for his 2003 solo album, Amigo Row, he recruited former Higher Burning Fire drummer John Anderson, keyboardist and guitarist Dustin Kinsey (also of The New Amsterdams), and guitarist Zach Holland. Having played together off and on since 2000 they decided to form White Whale adding ex-Get Up Kids bassist Robert Pope. The band has been called both a side project and an indie Supergroup (music), super group. Merge Records is an independent record label based in Durham, North Carolina. It was founded in 1989 by Laura Ballance and Mac McCaughan. It began as an outlet for music from their band Superchunk and music created by friends, and has expanded to include artists from around the world, with records reaching the top of the '' Billboard'' music charts. Ed Rose is an American sound engineer and record producer. He has worked extensively with groups in the modern emo and pop punk scenes. He also co-owns Black Lodge Recording with Rob Pope and his brother Ryan Pope, members of the emo band The Get Up Kids. History Rose held an interest in sound recording in his high school years, which was nurtured by his family. One year he got a Fostex X-15 recorder for Christmas. The next year he moved up to a Fostex 250, which he still uses. His interest in sound recording continued to grow, and he decided to attend the Full Sail Center for the Recording Arts. He interned at Studio 55 in Los Angeles. After an ownership change, he left Studio 55 and tried freelancing for six months. However, he found himself doing more technical setup than engineering, so he moved to Lawrence, Kansas in 1991 to attend The University of Kansas to get a degree in electrical engineering. Rob Pope
Robert Pope is an American musician, best known as the bassist for Spoon and The Get Up Kids. History Rob Pope grew up in Olathe, Kansas. In the summer of 1994, he was in a band called "Kingpin" with his brother Ryan and future Get Up Kids bandmate Jim Suptic. After the band broke up due to internal conflicts, Rob and Jim re-formed with Matt Pryor, who had been playing with Secular Theme and friend Nathan Shay on drums. After Shay was replaced with Rob's brother Ryan, the band recorded its first release, Four Minute Mile. After The Get Up Kids called it quits, Rob joined the band Koufax, along with his brother Ryan to form their new rhythm section. Together they recorded the album '' Hard Times are in Fashion'' in 2005. In the same year he joined the band White Whale to record their album WW1.
