WTOX (1480 AM broadcasting, AM) is a sports gambling formatted Broadcasting, broadcast radio station licensed to Bensley, Virginia, serving Metro Richmond, Virginia, Richmond. WTOX is owned and operated by Michael Mazursky, through licensee Mobile Radio Partners, Inc. Frequency history 1480 in the Richmond was originally used by WLEE (1480 AM), WLEE, which had moved there from 1450 kHz in 1950 as part of a power increase. WLEE, which grew to be the main Top 40 radio station in Richmond in the 1960s and early 1970s, shared its time with an even older station, WBBL (Virginia), WBBL, which broadcast church services on Sunday. WLEE was shuttered December 31, 1988, for economic reasons, taking WBBL with it. Sale On July 14, 2015, Davidson Media Group announced it would be selling WTOX and sister station then-WVNZ to TBLC Virginia Holdings, LLC. for $400,000. The sale was consummated on November 5, 2015. WVNZ (1450 kHz) is a Spanish CHR formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Highland Springs, Virginia, serving Metro Richmond. WVNZ is owned and operated by Mike Mazursky, through licensee Mobile Radio Partners, Inc. History On November 9, 2015, the then-WREJ went silent (off the air). Its previous black gospel format moved to sister station WLEE 990 AM, replacing news/talk. On February 4, 2016, WREJ swapped call signs with its sister station, assuming the WLEE call sign. WLEE (1480 AM) was a radio station in Richmond, Virginia, United States. Last owned by Gilcom Corporation of Virginia, the station broadcast an adult standards format before closing. It broadcast from October 1, 1945, to December 31, 1988. The frequency was shared with WBBL, which primarily served to broadcast the services of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church; for its entire history, WBBL programs were broadcast on WLEE's transmitter. Established by Thomas Garland Tinsley, the station emerged as one of Richmond's most popular radio stations and as its leading Top 40 station from the 1960s through the mid-1970s. However, as music listening shifted to the FM band, its audience fell, and by the time it was closed, it had not made money in a decade. Bensley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Chesterfield County, Virginia, United States. It is an inner suburb of Richmond, Virginia. The population was 5,971 at the 2020 census. WBBL (Virginia)
WBBL was a radio station in Richmond, Virginia, United States, which broadcast from 1924 until 1989, although the silenced station was not formally deleted until 1994. For its entire existence, it was owned by the Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. WBBL was Richmond's oldest radio station and the second-oldest station in Virginia. The station operated part-time throughout its existence, broadcasting the church's Sunday daytime services plus Sunday night programming. Beginning in 1945, WBBL shared time with, and used the transmitter of, WLEE, which began operating on 1450 kHz that year and moved to 1480 kHz in 1950. From 1945 to 1989, WBBL's schedule totaled two hours and 15 minutes per week. AM broadcasting is radio broadcasting using amplitude modulation (AM) transmissions. It was the first method developed for making audio radio transmissions, and is still used worldwide, primarily for medium wave (also known as "AM band") transmissions, but also on the longwave and shortwave radio bands.
