WSJW (550 AM) is a radio station licensed to Pawtucket, Rhode Island, serving the Providence area. Established in 1950 as WPAW, the station is owned by Relevant Radio, Inc. and airs Catholic talk radio programming. History In 1948, a construction permit was issued for 500 watts on 1380 kHz for Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The station went on the air in 1950 as WPAW with local origination studios and transmitter originally located on the grounds of the affiliated "Peoples Coal Company" coal yard at 75 Mill Street in Cumberland, Rhode Island. In 1952, it moved to 550 kHz, and on October 13, 1961, the station was renamed WXTR. Broadcast studios and transmitter were moved to along the Blackstone River at 101 John Street in Cumberland, Rhode Island. On March 25, 1972, the call letters changed to WGNG ("Gold-N-Great") with the station adopting an oldies format. WHIM (Rhode Island)
WHIM (known on-air as "WHIM Country") was a country music radio station in the Providence, Rhode Island, market. History WHIM was first heard on April 15, 1947, when a new daytimer signed on for the first time on 1110 kHz. From 1958–1966, while under ownership of C. George Taylor and Bob Engles, WHIM was a top 40 station competing with WPRO/630 and WICE/1290. The station's owners also operated WHIM-FM/99.9 licensed to Cranston, Rhode Island, which later became WLOV and went dark. A new WHIM-FM emerged on 94.1 MHz in 1966 when WHIM began broadcasting the format it would keep in one form or another for 31 years: country music. Adult standards (also sometimes known as the nostalgia or Big Band format) is a North American radio format heard primarily on AM or class A FM stations. Adult standards started in the 1950s and is aimed at "mature" adults, meaning mainly those people over 50 years of age, but it is mostly targeted for senior citizens. It is primarily on AM because market research reveals that only persons in that age group listen to music on AM in sizable numbers. Adult standards first became a popular format in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a way to reach mature adults who came of age before the rock era but were perhaps too mature for adult contemporary radio or too young for beautiful music or MOR stations.
