WRFT-TV
WRFT-TV (channel 27), known as WRLU from 1974 to 1975, was a television station in Roanoke, Virginia, United States. Affiliated with ABC through its existence, the station telecast from 1966 to 1975, with a short break in 1974. WRFT-TV operated from studios on Little Brushy Mountain in Salem and, in later years, a transmitter on Poor Mountain. Channel 27 signed on after numerous failed attempts by ABC's primary affiliate in the market, Lynchburg's WLVA-TV, to improve its coverage in the market's more mountainous western portion. The station was plagued by financial problems for most of its existence, even after moving its transmitter to Poor Mountain alongside the other Roanoke-licensed stations in 1971. A mass staff walkout knocked the station off the air for much of the spring and summer of 1974. Poor Mountain
Poor Mountain is a ridge of high peaks located in Roanoke County, Virginia and Montgomery County, Virginia. At 3,928 feet, Poor Mountain is the tallest mountain in the immediate area. Poor Mountain has the largest known population, by far, of piratebush ''( Buckleya distichophylla)'', a plant which draws nutrients from the roots of Eastern Hemlock trees. Piratebush is found only in limited numbers at a few other locations in Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The Poor Mountain Natural Area Preserve has been established to protect this population. Twelve O'clock Knob is located adjacent to Poor Mountain in Roanoke County directly south of Salem, Virginia. Thaxton, Virginia
Thaxton is an unincorporated community in western Bedford County, Virginia, United States. The community is located along U.S. Route 460 between Bedford and Montvale. It is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Thomas Methodist Episcopal Chapel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Thaxton was the site of a deadly train accident on July 2, 1889 that killed at least 18 and injured 21. The accident, caused when a passenger train derailed over a section of track that had been washed away by unusually heavy rains, was one of the deadliest railroad accidents in Virginia's history. A memorial was erected later that year in Cleveland, Tennessee in memory of three of the victims, all from prominent families in that city, who were on their way to attend the 1889 World's Fair in Paris.
