WRFT-TV
WRFT-TV, known as WRLU from 1974 to 1975, was a television station on channel 27 in Roanoke, Virginia, United States. Affiliated with ABC through its existence, the station telecast from March 1966 to April 1974 and again from September 1974 to February 1975. Financial problems caused the station's demise after having experienced a mass staff walkout in 1974; the station was more than $1 million in debt when it closed. WRFT-TV operated from studios on Little Brushy Mountain in Salem and, in later years, a transmitter on Poor Mountain. History Roanoke already had an ignominious history of UHF television prior to WRFT-TV. WROV-TV, also operating on the third of Roanoke's three commercial station allocations, had broadcast for five months in 1953 before becoming the first-ever television station to shut down in the United States. WSET-TV (channel 13) is a television station licensed to Lynchburg, Virginia, United States, serving as the ABC affiliate for the Roanoke–Lynchburg market. The station is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group, and has studios on Langhorne Road in Lynchburg; its transmitter is located atop Thaxton Mountain, near Thaxton, Virginia. History Channel 13 began operations on February 8, 1953, as WLVA-TV from a transmitter on Tobacco Row Mountain west of Sweet Briar. The station was owned by Lynchburg Broadcasting Corporation, which also owned WLVA radio (580 AM). WLVA-TV also served Charlottesville, where residents reported good reception during testing, from this transmitter site. The station was originally a CBS affiliate, but also carried programs from ABC, NBC, and DuMont as well. By the end of 1954, Roanoke and Lynchburg had been collapsed into a single market. WROV-TV, UHF Channel 27 in Roanoke, Virginia, was an early TV station in Roanoke and the second oldest (having signed on shortly after WSLS-TV). Established February 15, 1953, it left the air on July 13, 1953, becoming the first UHF television station in the United States to have ceased operations. History In 1950s, the Federal Communications Commission had allocated channels 7, 10, and 27 for Roanoke and 13 for nearby Lynchburg, Virginia. Shenandoah Life Insurance Company (the owners of WSLS radio) obtained the channel 10 license and launched WSLS-TV on December 11, 1952; Roanoke Radio (owners of WROV radio) signed on soon after with Channel 27. Premiering on January 6, 1975, the show never found an audience against ''Today'' or the CBS combo of the '' CBS Morning News'' and ''Captain Kangaroo''.
