South Carolina Public Radio (SCPR) is the National Public Radio member network serving the state of South Carolina. It is licensed to the South Carolina Educational Television Commission, an agency of South Carolina state government. It is a sister network to South Carolina Educational Television. The radio network's primary operations and Public Information Files are located on George Rogers Boulevard in Columbia, near Williams-Brice Stadium. The network's eight transmitters at 100 kW (5) and 30 kW (3) provide at least secondary coverage to nearly all of South Carolina, with portions of North Carolina and Georgia. History The S.C. Educational Television Commission had its mission broadened to include FM radio in the late 1960s. WJWJ-FM (89.9 FM) is a non-commercial, listener-supported public radio station licensed to Beaufort, South Carolina, and serving the South Carolina Lowcountry. It is part of the statewide "News and Talk Network" from South Carolina Public Radio (SCPR) and is a member of National Public Radio (NPR). The offices and studios are on George Rogers Boulevard in Columbia. WJWJ-FM has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 48,000 watts. It is a Class C1 station. Its transmitter is off White Hall Road near Green Pond, South Carolina, in Colleton County. It shares a tower with sister station WJWJ-TV 16, part of the SCETV network. The station primarily features news and information radio format with programs from National Public Radio, along with classical and other genres of music during late mornings, nights and weekends. Walter B. Edgar (born December 10, 1943) is an American historian and author specializing in Southern history and culture, particularly for South Carolina. Edgar has authored or edited several books about the state, including ''South Carolina: A History'' and ''The South Carolina Encyclopedia''. He is known for hosting the popular weekly radio show ''Walter Edgar's Journal'' on South Carolina Public Radio on historic and cultural topics, as well as the daily feature ''South Carolina A to Z'' on South Carolina Public Radio. Michael Jay Feinstein (born September 7, 1956) is an American singer, pianist, and music Revivalist artist, revivalist. He is an archivist and interpreter for the repertoire known as the Great American Songbook. In 1988, he won a Drama Desk Special Award for celebrating American musical theater songs. Feinstein is also a multi-platinum-selling, five-time Grammy-nominated recording artist. He is the founder of the Great American Songbook Foundation and the artistic director for Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, Indiana. ''Piano Jazz'' is a weekly one-hour radio show produced and distributed by National Public Radio (NPR). It began on June 4, 1978, and was hosted by jazz pianist Marian McPartland (1918–2013) until 2011. It is the longest-running cultural program on NPR. The show generally features a single guest (though small groups and duos are also featured at times), and usually consists of about an equal mixture of discussion and playing, often duets with McPartland. Initially the guests were limited to jazz pianists, but the format was later expanded to include performers on other instruments as well as other genres (though the performances remain focused on jazz tunes). WSVH (91.1 FM) is a 96,000-watt public radio station broadcasting from Savannah, Georgia, and transmitting from the WVAN-TV 9 (GPB TV) tower to the west in Pembroke, Georgia, north of Fort Stewart. WNSC-FM is a National Public Radio station in Rock Hill, South Carolina. A member of South Carolina Public Radio (formerly ETV Radio), it carries programming from South Carolina Public Radio's all-news network. History News and classical music WNSC-FM signed on January 3, 1978, as WPRV, initially broadcasting instructional programs during the day before beginning full-time broadcasting in July. The same day it went on the air, WNSC-TV channel 30 began broadcasting.
