WLRX (106.1 FM) and WAWX (101.7 FM) are broadcast radio stations. WLRX is licensed to Vinton, Virginia, serving Metro Roanoke. WAWX is licensed to Lynchburg, Virginia, serving Metro Lynchburg. WLRX plays a Contemporary Christian format, while WAWX airs a Contemporary Worship format as an affiliate of Air1. Both WLRX and WAWX are owned and operated by Educational Media Foundation. Combined 106.1/101.7 history 106.1 FM started out with the call sign WWFO on January 18, 1991 and officially launched in 1994. 101.7 FM started out with the call sign WDMS-FM on August 1, 1964 before being changed to WJJS in 1969 with a Black music format. In 1986 the calls and format moved to its sister station at 1320 AM, while the FM became Top-40 as "U102" WXYU. WIRO (107.1 FM) is a station covering the Huntington, West Virginia area. The Educational Media Foundation outlet broadcasts at 107.1 MHz with an ERP of 3.1 kW, is licensed to Ironton, Ohio and is currently branded as an Air1 affiliate playing contemporary worship music. History WIRO, which originally signed on the air in 1973 as WITO, would later go through format and call sign changes as WMLV (1985–97) and WFXN (1997–2002) before Clear Channel Communications transformed them into a local version of the KISS-FM brand under the WBKS call sign. But unlike the traditional mainstream top 40 format that was used at their sister stations, this version focused on rhythmic hits and did not use the trademarked blue ball. WAYI (104.3 FM) is an American Christian contemporary radio station. The station is licensed to Charlestown, Indiana, serving the Louisville, Kentucky, radio market. The station is owned by WAY-FM Network History The station was owned by Radio One when it was rhythmic contemporary WBLO, and switched its format in 2005 to classic country music. In 2007, Radio One sold the station to the WAY-FM Network, a Christian broadcaster and took the call letters WAYI. The station used to be a simulcast of WESI, 105.1 FM, but up until 2010 it had simulcast with WRVI. WRDI (95.7 FM, "Redeemer Radio") is a radio station broadcasting a Catholic talk format. Licensed to Nappanee, Indiana, WRDI serves the South Bend, Indiana market. History 95.7 signed on as WLRX on December 16, 1991 (the calls for the construction permit granted in 1990 had been WXJG, but the station was never on the air with those calls). WLRX broadcast ABC Radio/ SMN's StarStation adult contemporary format serving the Nappanee area under the name "Star 96," then segued to a Hot AC direction with local DJs as "Magic 95.7" and broadened its focus to include South Bend and Elkhart. It was during this time the station also changed hands from Indiana Star Broadcasting to Service Communications of South Bend. Service was purchased by Talking Stick which is now a part of the Federated Communications of Elkhart umbrella.
